Wednesday's Woe - Warning! Griever on Board! ~ May You Grieve in Peace!

Wednesday's Woe

Warning!

Baby Griever on Board!

Child-loss Grief in many ways throws you under the bus. Beaten up, maimed, and even crippled, you crawl out as best you can, from under its wheels to look at your life to see what's left of it.

You discover that it takes 90% of your energies to dress your wounds, manage your bandages, casts, canes, wheelchairs, prosthetics, stitches, I.V.'s from the emotional devastations wreaked. So you find after some healing, you may have about 10% of your energy left over, so you'll want to examine where you might want to put those energies.

Naturally, you become very selective as to where that remaining 10% of your energies will be invested...

You, of necessity, must re-examine the former emotional infrastructures of your life.

If there are back roads that are too icy after life's storms have hit, you find you must avoid those at all costs.

If there are hazardous intersections ahead, you know you must take wide detours around those.

If a snowstorm is predicted, you even may decide to stay home.

To remind yourself of dangers, you may have to place signs up along your way:

Warning! Toxic Persons Ahead!

Warning! Unrealistic "Get-Over-It persons" Ahead!

Warning! Pseudo-Intimacy Ahead ~ Watch for run-away exits to avoid a crash!

Warning! F-O-G May Set in Ahead!

(F.O.G.* = Fear, Obligation, Guilt-Manipulators)

Put on Your Hard Hats to Resist!

Warning! Thin Veneers of Kindness May Disguise Deep Holes of Meanness Underneath! Take Safer Route!

Warning! Rock Slides of

"If-You-Really-Loved-God-You-Would-Be-Triumphant-Over-Deep-Grief"

Abound Here!

Warning! Sinkholes of Malicious Anger over your emotional fragility May Take You Down!

Warning! Slippery Slope of Sick
Comments Ahead!

Danger! FLOOD-ZONE of Insensitive, Toxic People Along This Road!

Watch for Sudden Bumps in Grief's Road!

Sometimes Even Grief CLIFFS Ahead!

Warning! HOLIDAYS Just Ahead!

Downright Vicious People Ahead!

Some Vicious When You Least Expect It!

Avoid Cold-Hearted People Like the Plague!

Grief offers a keener CLARITY about life ~ what's really important, who is really safe, and what events can actually bring prospects of comfort and relief. With seasoned experience, Grief offers as well, the proper WARNING! signs to avoid potential pitfalls.

Take heed, O griever, please proceed with caution!

Enjoy the SAFE scenery ahead!

And please,

be wary!

DON'T FEED THE BEARS!

Protect Yourself!

And May You Grieve in Peace!

Tuesday's Trust - The Visit and The Flashback... ~ God's Sweet Grace When PTSD Hits Me at Work

Tuesday's Trust

The Visit and The Flashback...

God's Sweet Grace When PTSD Hits Me at Work

(I'm getting ready for work in the morn,

Usually a time when I might mourn...)

I'm preparing for work, putting make-up on

When she came to me today, from out of th' blue.

She smiled, said "Hi Mommy!" and then she laughed.

(Usually she comes to me when I'm blue,

When I'm crying so hard, I sob and gasp...)

I said, "Hi baby!" and then asked her why

now? with my expression so quizzical ~

She laughed at my look, "I'm just popping by!"

I too laughed at my look, so comical...

Soon after, I talked to a sad mother

in my office, and found myself flashed-back...

as I jumped from this day to another...

when it was my child's, not hers, life out of whack...

Instead of it sending me plummeting down,

I flashed to her (my baby's) face as she'd earlier come roun'.

I smiled to myself seeing what she'd done...

reminding me: She's alive, with God 'nd Son...!

My flashback faded as quickly as it had come...

Then I understood the reason she had come...

Thank you, my child, for your kindness ~ Well done!

I listen as my client describes her son...

Not missing a beat, we get our work done.

The graces of God rained down on this one!

Thank You! Sweet Father's Intervention done!

Monday's Mourning Ministry - Grief Is a Tidal Wave... / From Where You Are ~Lifehouse

Monday's Mourning Ministry

Grief Is a Tidal Wave...

~

From Where You Are

~Lifehouse

The Agony of Grief

What is there to say about grief?

Grief is a tidal wave that overtakes you,

smashes down upon you with unimaginable force,

sweeps you up into its darkness,

where you tumble and crash against unidentifiable surfaces,

only to be thrown out on an unknown beach, bruised, reshaped.

Grief means not being able to read more than two sentences at a time.

It is walking into rooms with intention that suddenly vanishes.

Grief is three o'clock in the morning sweats that won't stop.

It is dreadful Sundays, Mondays that are no better.

It makes you look for a face in the crowd,

knowing full well the face we want cannot be found in that crowd.

Grief is utter aloneness that razes the rational mind

and makes room for the phantasmagoric.

It makes you suddenly get up and leave in the middle of a meeting,

without saying a word.

Grief makes what others think of you moot.

It shears away the masks of normal life

and forces brutal honesty out of your mouth

before propriety can stop you.

It shoves away friends,

scares away so-called friends,

and rewrites address books for you.

Grief makes you laugh at people who cry over spilled milk,

right to their faces.

It tells the world that you are untouchable

at the very moment when touch

is the only contact that might reach you.

It makes lepers out of upstanding citizens.

Grief discriminates against no one.

It kills. Maims. And cripples.

It is the ashes from which the phoenix rises,

and the mettle of rebirth.

It returns life to the living dead.

It teaches that there is nothing absolutely true or untrue.

It assures the living that we know nothing for certain.

It humbles. It shrouds. It blackens. It enlightens.

Grief will make a new person out of you,

if it doesn't kill you in the making.

~Lifehouse

So far away from where you are

These miles have torn us worlds apart

And I miss you, yeah I miss you

So far away from where you are

I'm standing underneath the stars

And I wish you were here

I miss the years that were erased

I miss the way the sunshine would light up your face

I miss all the little things

I never thought that they'd mean everything to me

Yeah I miss you

And I wish you were here

I feel the beating of your heart

I see the shadows of your face

Just know that wherever you are

Yeah I miss you

And I wish you were here

I miss the years that were erased

I miss the way the sunshine would light up your face

I miss all the little things

I never thought that they'd mean everything to me

Yeah I miss you

And I wish you were here

So far away from where you are

These miles have torn us worlds apart

And I miss you, yeah I miss you

And I wish you were here

Friday's Faith - Does Child-Loss Grief Make Me An Alien?

Friday's Faith

Does Child-Loss Grief Make Me An Alien?

After going through a Thanksgiving of peace as it was designed around our child-loss grieving needs, not around the expectations of others, my heart is nurtured, and for that I'm so thankful! But there is a heightened awareness of how much I do not "fit in" to the world around me.

One family member took it upon her naughty self to write a rebuking email, heavy-laden with guilt, manipulation and sentimentalism. As if I didn't already have enough of a load on my troubled heart, you felt the need to pile on to a heart-broken bereaved mother?!

Such message from a person one otherwise would expect to be kind, compassionate, and caring adds to the disillusionment of this griever. It also underlines, accentuates, and aggravates the new realizations of how "odd" I am, of how I don't "fit in," of how I feel like I have been dropped onto a foreign planet where no previously-known earthly citizen understands, nor can communicate with this grieving alien.

It is a harrowing experience, like I am living in an Alfred Hitchcock unsolvable mystery --trapped on a planet where no one speaks my language, and expects behaviors from me that I can no longer produce to accommodate the canned-holiday-expectations of decorum. And such unconformity is treated as being right up there with the "unpardonable sins" such as blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, as family-get-togethers on man-made holidays are treated as holy as God Himself, barring any exceptions to the rule without threats of disbarring, or banishment from the tribe, if not even incurring the wrath of God Himself.

It is not so much the disappointment of the heaviness of Child-Loss Grief itself I grapple with as I am at a fairly peaceful place in Grief, that "It is what it is" - and that I must do what I need to do to cope with it.
But it IS a very heavy load, and others must simply
"Deal with it or you won't be dealing with me!"

It is more that I struggle with this weird sense of isolation from 99% of the earth's population who don't "get it" when it comes to my severe grief and continued broken heart EVEN though I do bask in God's love and comfort!

Many do not seem to think the two of those are compatible: If I have the latter (God's love and comfort), the first (Severe Grief and a Broken Heart) should not exist at all.
...So now, they feel a need to punish me...

So, I do what comes true to my heart, I turn to my Living Lord who has Living words for me and my troubled spirit.

Does Child-Loss Grief Make Me an Alien?

Here, I do not belong: I'm a citizen of Heaven...

Here, I do not fit in ~ the only "fit" I have here is th' one I've thrown...

Here, make me yeast for this world's leaven,

Here, prepare my soul to bow at Your Throne.

Here, Your child-loss griever is an alien!

Here, use Grief to sanctify (me to be) Heaven's citizen!

To which God assures me,

"I will create a City on that Shore:

Sounds of weeping, crying will be no more!

You will be a people blessed by the Lord;

My chosen ones will long enjoy (My) reward.

None will be harmed or destroyed in that City;

Your work (will) not (be) in vain, nor your children doomed t' pity.

Wait on Me, trust that My work will be done

In you, your work, and in your little one.

"Trust in Me in going through this desert,

Rest in me in this long winter's drought,

For soon you will find your sure treasure,

For here, My ways are past finding out!

"Faith is hope's blessed assurance,

The lack of sight's sure certainty.

Here, you must suffer endurance

of temporary misery,

awaiting Grief's alchemy

w'th paradoxical results achieved

accomplished by My mystery!

"Before you call, I will answer,

While you're still speaking, I will hear,

For you, My child, I have ransomed!

To you, I will ever draw near."

My Lord, though here, I may be an alien,

That is what You've called us to be,

For our citizenship IS in Heaven,

For we were designed to live there with Thee!

Give me grace for Grief's journey,

Knowing I walk through it with You,

Should others around me not understand me,

What's that to me if I'm ever accompanied by Thee?!

{based on Isaiah 65, and Hebrews 11}

Thursday's Therapy - TRAUMA Therapy Toolbox: EFT ~Emotional Freedom Technique / Tapping

Thursday's Therapy

TRAUMA Therapy Toolbox:

EFT - Emotional Freedom Technique / Tapping

A new grieving-mother friend emailed me recently and in the process of our writing one another, I discovered that she has been in grief almost three times as long as I have been. So she was telling me she has received therapy off and on over those years, but she was unaware that there was such a thing as "Trauma Therapy."

I should not be too surprised because the discoveries about trauma are relatively new. And yet, this precious mother lost her child in such a violent way, that I could hardly believe there was no one in the helping field that would have helped her with the traumatic aspects of her very deep grief.

So I decided to share some of what I have found helpful regarding treating our trauma that can be found on the internet.

*****

Tommy and I attended a seminar in Atlanta, Georgia a few months ago for our continuing education led by the psychiatrist who helped to coin the term, PTSD, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, psychiatrist Bessel A. van der Kolk; he also helped to formulate the symptoms that composed the disorder for the Diagnostic Manual for Psychology/Psychiatry. Dr. van der Kolk, in his workshop, instructed us in how to do the tapping technique shown below, and though he (like I) does "talk therapy," he was amazed to discover this technique that uses very little talk therapy, but directly addresses the body through tapping to help effectively rewire our brain by rewiring the brain's neural pathways.

Hebb's Law - Neurons that fire together wire together.

Thus, as we think or envision the traumatic memory or imagine what our child went through before death, the "neuro-bundle" in our brain becomes thicker and thicker over time. Our bodies are triggered by this wiring and rewiring to go into fight-flight-or freeze response in association with such traumatic memories.

In tapping, your body is activating this thick neuro-bundle, and then all of a sudden, the body gets a different signal with your tapping and your newly-spoken positive affirmations. Before, our bodies went into fight-or-flight feelings, "the stress response."

Now we are feeling safe feelings through tapping and repeating safe affirmations along with our thinking the otherwise-frightening thought. So the body rewires the brain to defuse that conditioned reflex loop, so that the body no longer goes into the stress response!

Once people learn how the tapping is done, it's simple enough for them to use on themselves whenever they sense fear or pain.

In recent years, we in the psychology field have seen the development of a family of therapies that offer clinically effective alternatives to traditional, long-term treatments. These therapies only require one to three sessions, but the results are usually permanent. Each of them provides noticeable relief from negative emotions, pain and trauma. It doesn't matter whether the pain suffered is physical or emotional. This first tool in your trauma therapy toolbox is called EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), better known as "Tapping."

EFT - Emotional Freedom Technique / Tapping:

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Demo with Aila

***Warning: If you try this technique along with this registered nurse, Aila, please stop immediately if you feel too much uncomfortable distress in using the technique!

It is important to keep a healthy balance between activating your emotional distress in order to keep your grief flowing, while maintaining a healthy level of emotional peace and safety.

You may want to either try it at another time, or use it in a therapeutic session with a trained psychotherapist who can help you through it.

How about you?

Have you been exposed to any type of "Trauma therapy" for your grief?

If so, I would love for you to share with me some of what you have experienced, and what was helpful and what was not.

Tommy and I would love to hear your experiences and perhaps learn more about what is in the field that can possibly be helpful to others in our same grieving-parent situation. Thank you, and I so look forward to hearing from you! Feel free to comment below, or if you had rather, you may email me at MotherGrieving @ gmail.com

May God bless,

Angie
