Wednesday's Woe - Missing At The Wedding

Wednesday's Woe

Missing At The Wedding

Three years ago today, my oldest child Rollin got married. He married his precious girlfriend of seven years. He asked her to marry him within days of the first-year anniversary of Merry Katherine's death... Tommy and I were barely functioning automatons.

I remember thinking I was glad we didn't have the whole responsibility of the wedding because I was doing well just to remember to pay our bills on time, much less be intact enough to help plan a whole wedding. As it was, we were in charge of the rehearsal dinner, and at the time, that felt like a mammoth task to us. We managed, somehow.

But on the night of the dinner, of course they had the wedding rehearsal first. Tommy and I were sitting about where we sat - same church, almost the same seat - on the day of Merry Katherine's funeral. No, we didn't get too triggered! The rehearsal began. Each groomsman was escorting a bridesmaid down the aisle and up the stairs to join the wedding party on the platform. Well, all the groomsmen except one... We held it together pretty well until the bride's brother Joe, who was best friends with Merry Katherine, practiced coming down the aisle alone as he had no Merry Katherine to escort. As soon as Joe walked past us during this rehearsal, before I knew it, Tommy sprang up out of his seat and ran out of the church. He had to go sit in the car awhile and have a good cry.

And then, we were supposed to go host a rehearsal dinner party? We are fairly outgoing people, or we were in our normal days, but we had no "festive" in us that night. Tommy somehow managed to pull it together to muddle through being the emcee for some of the evening, but we were very blessed that Rollin has a lively group of friends who could basically entertain with their stories. I do remember Tommy saying, "Okay guys, let's hear from you!" and they jumped in. I was able, with God's help toward the end of the evening to be able to tell a funny story on Rollin. So, like I said, we managed.

Since this momentous wedding three years ago, we have not been able to attend any weddings since. Not even of our precious niece whose wedding was right here in Knoxville...

Such is life amidst Child-loss Grief. We are just not the same people, and I doubt seriously we ever will be again. Happy Anniversary, Rollin and Stephanie. We are so thankful you two are together, and that your first baby will be coming mid-August! (And finding out that she is a baby girl, Rollin and Stephanie told us her name is to be "Merry" Elizabeth Prince!) God is good.

Wednesday's Woe - The Heavy Presence of Your Absence

Wednesday's Woe

The Heavy Presence of Your Absence

The emptiness from your absence fills the vapid room;

The Great Void o’ertakes silence like the sonic boom...

Though no one speaks it, your absence brings such gloom;

Yes, your spirit’s in Heaven, though your body’s in the tomb…

How do we celebrate Christmas...when our baby’s left our “womb”?

The Heavy Presence of Your Absence sucks air from the room,

Sapping life-giving air from each person in the room,

Filling hearts with dread, sealing each of us with doom.

The heavy presence of your absence within our room does loom…

And yet the spirit of your presence fills the air like sweet perfume

So despite death’s cold of snow, out peeks the spring thaw’s bloom…

Monday's Mourning Ministry - See (Our Heart's Not Merry for Our Merry is Not)

Monday's Mourning Ministry - See

Our Heart’s Not Merry for Our Merry is Not…

Pictures are sent of fam'lies intact,

Smiles on faces, arm in arm with glee—

How do our pining hearts counteract

Fam'lies gay, when our fam'ly can't be?

God in Heaven, my heart is breaking...

Holidays are here, but we are not—

Presents this year we are forsaking,

Our heart’s not merry for our Merry is not...

How go on as if our heart were gay?

How go on when life's at a standstill?

How go on - we didn't have a say…

When her heart stopped—our heart was killed.

Mourning, Mourning on Christmas morning,

To do anything else we cannot.

Others at peace while our heart’s warring—

Our heart’s not merry, for our Merry is not...

See

(Lyrics)

Right now all I can taste are bitter tears

Right now all I can see are clouds of sorrow

From the other side of all this pain,

Is that you I hear, laughing loud

Calling out to me, saying,

“See, its everything you said that it would be

And even better than you would believe

And I’m counting down the days

Until you’re here with me

And finally you’ll see!”

But right now all I can say is Lord, how long

Before you come and take away this aching?

This night of weeping seems to have no end

But when the morning light breaks through

We’ll open up our eyes…

And we will see,

It’s everything He said that it would be

And even better than we would believe

And He’s counting down the days

Until He says, "Come with Me!"

And finally

He’ll wipe every tear from our eyes

And make everything new just like He promised

Wait and see

Just wait and see

Wait and see

And I’m counting down the days

Until I see,

It’s everything He said that it would be

And even better than we would believe,

And I’m counting down the days

Til He says, "Come with Me!"

And finally we’ll see...

We will see...

We'll taste and see that the Lord is good

The Lord is good

The Lord is good

Oh taste and see that the Lord is good

The Lord is good

Friday's Faith - No Presence I See…

No Presence I See…

Sure of what I hope for,

certain of what I do not see—

Her presence is what I long for

More than presents under a tree…

So we are canceling Christmas

this year—no presents, wreath, nor tree,

And though we long for Christmas past—

It’s through the veil we strain to see…

Sure of what I hope for,

certain of what I do not see—

Christmas busy-ness I abhor,

My present is her presence…soon I’ll see!

So we are canceling Christmas

At least as once we knew it…

Looking back to first Christmas past

God’s Present to us – His presence

Born in a baby…to be born in us…

Later, He’d choose to lose it…

Sure of what I hope for,

certain of what I do not see—

God’s presence is what I long for

More than presents under a tree…

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

Wednesday's Woe - My Christmas of 2008

Wednesday's Woe

My Christmas of 2008

- Two Years Since She's Been Gone...

(The Grief Process Amidst Holiday Pain)

Two days before Christmas . . . why am I so

blue? It’s not th’ massive shopping; I've barely

stepped in a store. So why’s my heart stopping;

why is my heart heavy as lead, like my

husband’s fifty-pound dumbbells are sitting

down on it? I don’t know; I must figure

it out. The festivities are coming

soon; it’s not a time to sit around and

pout. Let me see if I can trace it back . . . .

...I think it started when I was pond’ring

sending my Christmas cards to other moms

and dads who have lost their children, too. There!

That’s it! My heart—already pulverized—

began to bleed some more: other parents

without their kids, going into Christmas

Day, a day full of memories of each

child at their happiest, jolly, bouncing

self, full of their childlike glee—now each is

gone! No wonder my lights are not yet on my

Christmas tree! My husband brought up boxes,

full of Christmas cheer; the first box that we

opened, what did we find? The stocking that

read—in Mommy’s needlepoint—“Merry Katherine,”

daintily edged with lacy white bric-a-brac;

it effectively gave our hearts a smack!

How do you put up decorations when

Your heart is feeling dead? My heart takes up

all my time, just trying to resuscitate

it. Christmas cards come rolling in, intact

with intact fam’ly pictures; (do they not

know our pain? Our picture’s not intact; it

has a giant hole where a giant heart

sat with her mischievous smile.) Each card’s a

reminder, it’s not a happy time. So,

my cards go out, no picture included,

to other parents lost in the hubbub

of the season...paying the dearest cost.

When I write their notes, my heart gets a little

heavier with each one. . . .

Now I am reminded, our Heav’nly Father

lost His Son so all of us could celebrate—

Our hearts are healed in Him; He knows our pain.

Out of love, He paved the way so we won’t

be long apart. Our family will be intact

again, joined with a merry heart, and now

He reminds me, my Merry Katherine will

have one of her merriest Christmases

ever, in Heav’n without a care, and really

it won’t be that long until we all are

There! Meanwhile, we have work to do to lead

others There. So Merry Christmas, Merry Katherine!

With all our many blessings—each family

member’s soul is intact!—I feel like a

millionaire! God, Your Son came down for us,

lived a life of suff’ring so each one in

our fam'ly could wear His family ring!

So, please cheer my heart to spread Your love 'round—

so all those “intact” fam'lies can know Your

love too, so they still will be “intact” fam'lies

when we all go Home to live with You!
