Tuesday's Trust - God Enters and Companions Our Suffering… and A Poem About Her Suffering...

Tuesday's Trust

God Enters and Companions Our Suffering…

and

A Poem About Her Suffering...

Suffering is a huge, unavoidable element in the human condition. To be human is to suffer. No one gets an exemption. It comes as no surprise then to find that our Holy Scriptures, immersed as they are in the human condition, provide extensive witness to suffering…

Lamentations, written out of the exile experience, provides the community of faith with a form and vocabulary for dealing with loss and pain…

Neither explaining nor offering a program for the elimination of suffering, Lamentations keeps company with the extensive biblical witness that gives dignity to suffering by insisting that God enters our suffering and is companion to our suffering.

"She cries herself to sleep at night,
tears soaking her pillow.
No one's left among her lovers to sit and hold her hand.
Her friends have all dumped her."

~from Lamentations 1

~Introduction to Lamentations, found in one version of The Message by Eugene Peterson, page 1474,
Verse from Lamentations 1, page 1475.

~~~
And later that night, rather in the wee hours of this morning, I wrote a poem, along with many, many tears to lament her suffering…
Poem: On Grappling with her Suffering that Night…
Her fall was astounding;
there was none to comfort her.
~Lamentations 1:9b
What?! On the night that you fell,
That fatal night (once Satan was through),
But before he sounded Death's knell,
There was none there to comfort you?!
Years spent with us, wiping your tears,
Feeling your pain, crying with you,
But in that bleak night's terrorizing fears,
No mommy or daddy there to comfort you?
How can this be? It's just not right:
We were not there to comfort your fright.
And then our God enters my plight…
But I trust God was there,
Holding you close, caressing your hair;
My baby girl, your Father was there!
He took you Home; He rescued you;
He held you close that whole night through;
He wiped your tears, poured out His love…
Ev'n as He does now for us… since you went Above.
Where would we go? What would we do?
If we did not know our God did rescue you?
Held in God's arms, sleep well now my child;
Since He holds us too, we'll join you in a while
When all tears shall cease underneath God's sweet smile…
“Christ was in agony in prayer, Luke 22:44. Many when they pray are rather in lethargy, than in an agony. When they are about the world they are all fire; when they are at prayer, they are all ice.”
Friday's Faith - How Do I Survive Child-Loss?
Friday's Faith
How Do I Survive Child-Loss?
What Is Faith?
It was faith that moved the mountain;
It was faith that filled the sea…
It was a word from God's own mouth
Saying simply, "Let there be…"
It is faith that moves my mountain of grief;
It is faith that fills this empty heart ~
Simple words from God's own mouth,
"My child, you will see…"
What is faith but eyes to see
That which is to come?
Faith shows me my child in Heaven…
Waiting There for me…
Wednesday's Woe - How Church, Family, and Friends are Like a Hospital
Wednesday's Woe
How Church/Family/Friends Are Like a Hospital...
Patients are gone. Sheets are changed.
Diseases are gone. Back to a blank.
Life can go on like their lives weren't here,
So they can go on, lives "disappear";
Conveniently, no one has to shed a tear.
My child is gone. Sheets are changed.
Family goes home. For them, nothing's changed...
They think it's over. They are deranged!
MY BABY'S GONE! MY LIFE'S FOREVER CHANGED!
But they go on. Lives "disappear";
Conveniently, no one has to shed a tear.
They all have lost their souls I fear.
My God of Love comes near
Beside, to shed a tear...
"Blessed are those who mourn," I hear....
Monday's Mourning Ministry - My Little Butterfly: Sweet Message from My Daughter in Heaven / I'm Not Alright ~Sanctus Real
Monday's Mourning Ministry
My Little Butterfly
~
I'm Not Alright ~Sanctus Real
My Little Butterfly
Sweet Message from my Daughter in Heaven
My baby girl, you left us five years ago.
It's been a dark, cold world since you left.
Our hearts are broken since you had to go;
We try to "live," but our lives are bereft.
… How hard it was to put you in the ground;
Daddy cried, not wanting you to be alone,
So, next to his mother, a plot he found,
So we keep you close, though we know you're gone.
"Mommy, sweet Mommy, I'm Here; can't you see?
God wouldn't leave me in the cold, dark ground!
My Abba Daddy resurrected me,
Saying, 'You once were lost, but now you're found!'
"I'm not so different than the butterfly,
Who had to go deep into her cocoon,
To resurrect so she could start to fly,
But now she can fly higher than the moon!
"Maybe too, your 'darkness' is like a tomb
That sucks away your life as you're grieving me,
But perhaps it can also be a womb
That restores your life to fly more like me...!
"Spread your wings Mommy; see if you can fly ~
God enters into us who're lost without Him;
Living or dying, we're restored new life
Till we shine more beautif'ly, like the cut gem!
"I'll be here waiting for Daddy and you,
But 'til God is ready, let Him fly through you ~
He is in the Resurrection business;
You'll fly like me, as God is my witness!
"Allow yourself the darkness of your grief,
You'll need to go under to get your wings….
But then, like the butterfly, you'll find relief;
You'll sail like the wind that the Darkest Storm brings!
"Keep your eyes on God; He shines through the Dark;
You'll soon fly out too, singing with the lark!"
*****
If we live, we live to the Lord;
and if we die, we die to the Lord.
So, whether we live or die,
we belong to the Lord.
~Romans 14:8 (NIV)
He is not the God of the dead,
but of the living,
for to Him
all are alive.
~Luke 20:38
I'm Not Alright
Sanctus Real
If weakness is a wound
that no one wants to speak of
then "cool" is just how far we have to fall
and I am not immune
I only want to be loved
But I feel safe behind the fire wall
Can I lose my need to impress?
If You want the truth,
I need to confess
I'm not alright, I'm broken inside,
broken inside
And all I go through,
it leads me to You,
it leads me to You.
Burn away the pride
Bring me to my weakness
"Til everything I hide behind is gone
And when I'm open wide
with nothing left to cling to,
Only you are there to lead me on
Cause honestly, I'm not that strong.
I'm not alright, I'm broken inside,
broken inside
And all I go through,
it leads me to You,
it leads me to You
Closer to You
Closer to You
Closer to You
I'm not alright, I'm broken inside,
broken inside
Broken inside, broken inside
And all I go through leads me to You,
leads me to You
I'm not alright
I'm not alright
I'm not alright
That's why I need You
Tuesday's Trust - Can We Trust Ourselves Amidst Child-Loss Grief?
Tuesday's Trust
Can We Trust Ourselves Amidst Child-Loss Grief?
The Walking Wounded of Grief's Guerilla Warfare
(A note to God and to my child)
I cannot seem to trust myself;
(Should You put me on a shelf?)
My Heart is now a war zone,
Insisting being on the throne,
For if I make a plan today,
Emotional Bombs have their say.
If my Mind won't stop and listen,
My Body plays out Heart's mission,
Stopping me dead in my tracks
With sudden guerilla attacks.
And yet, why should I be surprised?
Since you died, Tear gas fills my skies.
Why are people surprised
At my implosion?
When you died, I survived
A nuclear explosion...
*****
"Yeah, we'll go to that funeral."
What were we thinking?
"Yeah, we can go around our family."
We have gone back and forth on that decision. Our bodies have not yet been able to do that. Well, we tried it once and were greatly burned...
"Yeah, I can make it down the hall without turning on any lights."
Problem is, I turned one door too soon and felt myself flying down our basement stairs, four broken bones later...
We are not the same as we were.
And we don't even know who we are.
Nor do we even know what we are capable of doing now.
Our hearts, minds, souls, bodies, and spirits are all on overload. PTSD often has a hay-day, taking on a life of its own within our bodies. Our rock-solid relationship has been challenged, shaken-up, tried, in ways we would have never thought possible.
Who are we now? And who will we become?
*****
Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed rejoice.
~Psalm 51:8
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
~Psalm 51:17
But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God's unfailing love for ever and ever.
~Psalm 52:8
Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me.
~Psalm 54:4
Monday's Mourning Ministry - Heartsick on Mother's Day / Light Up the Sky ~The Afters
Monday's Mourning Ministry
Heartsick on Mother's Day
~
Light Up the Sky
~The Afters
Heartsick on Mother's Day
Something on my heart does prey
Even in my joyful day
Celebrating happily
Watching my son in his play...
Someone leans over: "Is your son...
your only one?"
I hear me say,
"No! That's his brother down th' way,
And...my daughter was killed
four years ago,"
it spilled....
Spirit plummeting to the ground,
E'en with all these people 'round...
Heartsick on Mother's Day
Enjoying my son in his play,
Laughing with my other son,
Thankful to be with my children,
All while grieving my little one...
Heartsick on Mother's Day;
Guess it'll always be this way...
Till God and she come back one Day...
And God wipes all our tears away,
I'll be...
Heartsick on Mother's Day.
Light Up the Sky
~The Afters
When I’m feeling all alone and so far to go
The signs are nowhere on this road, guiding me home
When the night is closing in
It’s falling on my skin
Oh God will You come close
Light, light, light up the sky
Light up the sky to show me You are with me
I, I, I can’t deny
No I can’t deny that You are right here with me
You’ve opened my eyes
So I can see You all around me
Light, light, light up the sky
Light up the sky to show me
That You are with me
When stars are hiding in the clouds
I don’t feel them shining
When I can’t see beyond my doubt
The silver lining
When I’ve almost reached the end
Like a flood You’re rushing in
Love is rushing in
Light, light, light up the sky
Light up the sky to show me You are with me
I, I, I can’t deny
No I can’t deny that You are right here with me
You’ve opened my eyes so I can see You all around me
Light, light, light up the sky
Light up the sky to show me...
That You are with me
So I run straight into Your arms
You’re the bright and morning Sun
To show Your love, there’s nothing You won’t do
Light, light, light up the sky
You light up the sky to show me You are with me
I, I, I can’t deny
No I can’t deny that You are right here with me
You’ve opened my eyes so I can see You all around me
Light, light, light up the sky
Light up the sky to show me...
That You are with me
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
That You are with me
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
That You are with me
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
