Welcome! I am Angie B. Prince, child of God, wife of Tommy, mother of 3, psychotherapist and Mother Grieving.
Tommy and I met in graduate school in Atlanta, then married in 1979 and started a Christian Counseling/Coaching practice in Knoxville, TN where we still live. We have 1 daughter Merry Katherine, forever-19 in Heaven, 2 sons, Nathan (age 34) (wife Ashley), and Rollin (age 37) (wife Stephanie), and two granddaughters, Ellie and Penny.
In this blog, we process our grief over our Merry Katherine who was killed along with two other teens in a brutal car crash while on the way to the beach on 8/2/2006 (two teens survived). Having lost our daughter suddenly and violently on the cusp of launching her into adulthood, we were thrown into Complicated and Traumatic Grief. We share here our agonizing process of wading through the multiple twists and turns of shattered assumptions, challenged faith, traumatized body-soul-and-spirts, and devastated hearts. May our grief touch some of your own pain as we walk through this difficult but sacred ground together.

OR "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted" Has Now Been Scientifically Documented!
. . . . . We now have physiological evidence via Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) that such "comfort" is indeed, a fact! In debilitating, complicated grief after the sudden death of a loved one, "comfort" was shown by significant nucleus accumbens activation in the brain's reward network!

The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised...
~Jesus
~Luke 4:18 KJV ~~~
O Lord, quicken our broken hearts to rest in Thee, for You alone heal us ever so gently throughout our lifetime on earth, yet culminate our healing fully when You wipe all our tears away, forever!
Thank You for Your faithful, tender, healing love poured out on us daily...
Truly, we need Thee every hour!
~~~
2And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.3And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying,
"Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them,4and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away."
"What could be 'good' about God's allowing His own Son to die on the cross?"
We know from Scripture that Jesus made it clear, it was His choice whether or not to go to the cross, but that He was willing to make that choice because He knew His Father's heart, and lovingly agreed to give up His own life, knowing what His own death would accomplish for us. . .
What wondrous love is this, O my soul?!
In Merry Katherine's funeral, the preacher read several of Merry Katherine's favorite passages that she had marked in her own Bible. The following passage was one of those favorites that he read to us that night, and it seems to capture both the Easter story and her own journey. God's love pours out through this passage, as well as His tender provision for each of us, His children.
Tommy related as I re-read this passage to him, that he has never told me this, but besides the verses of, "Who told you you were naked?" in Genesis, and "Why do you look for the living among the dead?" in Luke, this is the third of his favorite Bible passages! It seems father and child think alike; it is remarkable how the passage simply captures the whole gospel in just a few verses. Of course I wept as I read it because it also maps out my child's final years and days of her journey in the Lord:
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade---kept in Heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith---of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire---may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and even though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
~I Peter 1:3-9 (New International Version)
Thank You God, for Your amazing love, and Your faithful provision, made available through the greatest of all sacrifices a Father and Son could ever make. It renders us speechless . . .
Everything the world is about is the push to "recover," hurry up and "get through" the grief and trauma of your loss. The world looks at the "good life" as
being prosperous,
having an abundance of possessions,
seeking pleasure,
pursuing happiness, and
seeking self-sufficiency...
Then, you read along in Ecclesiastes, and God turns everything upside down.
"Let Me Grieve!" was my poem in last week's Friday's Faith. When I read scripture, God says this mourning is beneficial, not detrimental as many would have me think. So, for those of us in grief, if you are looking for meaning in your time of grief, read Ecclesiastes 7:1-4.
It's not that we want to be in the "house of mourning"; we didn't want to be in the "house of mourning." We didn't ask to be in the "house of mourning," but we were visited by a horrendous loss~the loss of our 19-year-old daughter in a car crash, and NOW -- now, we are residents in a "house of mourning."
And the strange thing is, Ecclesiastes says being in this "house of mourning" is a good thing, and that "sorrow" is better than "laughter"! So should we hurry up and get over this good thing? We don't know. We are just grieving our loss, attempting to manage our trauma, and learning to trust our God at a much deeper level... And somehow He comes alongside, ministers to us, and reminds us of what is most important about life. For that, we do count ourselves blessed.
A good name is better than fine perfume,
and the day of death better than the day of birth.
It is better to go to a house of mourning
than to go to a house of feasting.
Sorrow is better than laughter,
because a sad face is good for the heart.
The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning,
but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.
But I know Your Love won't leave me down on this ground.
All my burdens laid down on You to rest...
Carry me Jesus on Your gentle breast.
*****
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls."
~Matthew 11:28-29 NLT
Shout for joy, O heavens;
rejoice, O earth,
burst into song,
O mountains!
For the LORD comforts His
people
and will have compassion on His afflicted ones.
But (we) said, "The LORD
has forsaken me,
the Lord has forgotten
me."
"Can a mother forget the
baby at her breast
and have no compassion
on the child she has
borne?
Though she may forget,
I will not forget you!
See, I have engraved you on
the palms of My hands..."
~Isaiah 49:13-16 NIV
Thank you to my good friend Danielle Helms for reminding me of the precious young man Jeremy Camp who found himself a widower early into his marriage. He seems to have learned of grief through directly tasting its bitter salts and then pouring out his heartfelt cries to God, later translating much of his heart-breaking angst and God's sweet faithfulness amidst it into songs for you and me. Thank you Danielle, and thank you Jeremy.
There Will Be A Day
~Jeremy Camp
I try to hold on to this world with everything I have,
But I feel the weight of what it brings,
And the hurt that trys to grab
The many trials that seem to never end,
His Word declares this truth,
That we will enter in this rest with wonders anew.
But I hold on to this hope and the promise that He brings
That there will be a place with no more suffering...
There will be a day with no more tears,
no more pain, and no more fears
There will be a day when the burdens of this place,
will be no more, we’ll see Jesus face to face,
But until that day, we’ll hold on to You always.
I know the journey seems so long,
You feel you're walking on your own.
But there has never been a step
Where you’ve walked out all alone.
Troubled soul don’t lose your heart
'Cause joy and peace He brings
And the beauty that’s in store
Outweighs the hurt of life’s sting...
But I hold on to this hope and the promise that He brings
That there will be a place with no more suffering...
There will be a day with no more tears,
no more pain, and no more fears...
There will be a day when the burdens of this place,
will be no more, we’ll see Jesus face to face!
But until that day, we’ll hold on to You always.
I can’t wait until that day
where the very One I’ve lived for always
will wipe away the sorrow that I’ve faced,
Oh, to touch the scars that rescued me
from a life of shame and misery
--Oh, this is why, this is why I sing….
There will be a day with no more tears,
no more pain, and no more fears...
There will be a day when the burdens of this place,
will be no more, we’ll see Jesus face to face!
There will be a day with no more tears,
no more pain, and no more fears...
There will be a day when the burdens of this place,
will be no more, we’ll see Jesus face to face!
There will be a day, He will wipe away the tears,
He will wipe away the tears,
He will wipe away the tears…..
There will be a Day!
Thank You, Lord. There WILL be a Day. Give us strength to walk through this world with its loss, its betrayals, its sin, its temptations, its sickness, pain, injury and disease, its dying, its alienation from You, its distancing from You, and its feelings of abandonment by You. Thank You that You're true when others aren't. Thank You that You're the way when all other ways lead to despair. Thank You that You're the life when death and its deadly encumbrances ever threaten to take us down. And thank You that though we may feel abandoned by You, we never are.
And, thank You dear Lord, "There WILL be a Day" when we see You face to face, surrounded by Your love, as You wipe the tears from our face. In the name of our Savior who literally had the love for us carved into His hands and feet, I pray. Amen.
