Tuesday's Trust — Identity Lost!

Drowning in grief, I flow under Grief's dam

Tuesday's Trust

Identity Lost!

Carefully I'm hidden under my words,

wondering who and what I really am,

thankful my shy spirit God undergirds...

He KNOWS who HE is...He's the Great "I AM."

Drowning in grief, I flow under Grief's dam,

Yet, I am His; He'll reveal who I am,

For FAITH and HOPE and TRUST are not just words...

May I rest in Thee like the little birds...

Then God showed me His Word, unseen before:

*Then Jesus said,

"God's Kingdom is like seed thrown on a field by a man who then goes to bed and forgets about it.

The seed sprouts and grows — he has no idea how it happens.

The earth does it all without his help:

  • first a green stem of grass,
  • then a bud,
  • then the ripened grain.
  • When the grain is fully formed,
  • he reaps--harvest time!"

God's LIFE grows in Grief's dark, unseen by eyes;

When all seems lost, that's when NEW LIFE springs forth;

I'll not need to know all the what's, whens, nor whys...

I'll trust and I'll rest in His arms evermore!

God's Kingdom is like seed thrown on a field by a man who then goes to bed and forgets about it. The seed sprouts and grows--

he has no idea how it happens.

Friday’s Faith - Keening Cries

Friday’s Faith

Keening Cries

We live in a superficial, media-driven culture that often seems uncomfortable with true depths of feeling. Indeed, it seems as if our culture has become increasingly intolerant of that acute sorrow, that intense mental anguish and deep remorse which may be defined as grief. We want to medicate such sorrow away. We want to divide it into recognizable stages so that grief can be labeled, tamed, and put behind us. But poets have always celebrated grief as one of the deepest human emotions. To grieve is to lament, to mourn, to let sorrow inhabit one's very being.

Robert Frost liked to distinguish between grievances (complaints) and griefs (sorrows). He even suggested that grievances, which are propagandistic, should be restricted to prose, "leaving poetry free to go its way in tears." Implicit in poetry is the notion that we are deepened by heartbreaks, that we are not so much diminished as enlarged by grief, by our refusal to vanish--to let others vanish--without leaving a verbal record. Poetry is a stubborn art. The poet is one who will not be reconciled, who is determined to leave a trace in words, to transform oceanic depths of feeling into the faithful nuances of art.

Keening Cries

by Angie Bennett Prince

Lots of guttural whimpers from my heart,

contractions of a mother’s soul, giving

birth to her child by being quite apart…

“(She was) dying here—let her go, to go on living…

A mother’s job: do what’s best for your child,

even if it means ‘dying’ on grief’s cross…”

I had NO choice when my child chose t’ go wild;

now, my only “choice” – to accept her loss?!

“But…you were watching her…dying on th’ vine;

there’s no pleasure in that, loving her so…

watching her be pickled by this world’s wine….

Birthing: give life. Give Life now: let her go.”

But Lord, I can’t: (my) children are my whole life!

“Yes,” He says to me, “so it was with Me…

to give Life, I had to give My Son’s life…

Your loss…is not forever…she’s with Me!”

But I’m here; it feels like a “Mother—FAIL”!

“No indeed, child, it is a Mother’s GAIN:

to give what you can’t keep—to save from hell!

Her soul’s with Me! Can you accept death’s pain?”

Oh Lord, I’m stuck in this world’s finite thought—

You gave up Your Child—my child’s Life You bought!

As the wheat must die to reproduce life,

so this mommy dies to spare her child’s Life…

So…again…I pick up my cross today,

life-as-I-knew-it gone…Lord, lead the way.

Fix my eyes on Jesus who bore His cross,

for the joy set before Him, endured th’ loss.

And in the throes of her death, miserable,

help me see You, the One invisible.

“What’s seen’s temporary; th’ unseen’s eternal;

conceding death…to birth Life’s…maternal.

Troubles now achieve Glory eternal…

So don’t lose heart midst keening cries maternal!”

Even Elizabeth Barrett Browning encouraged passion and grief as we struggle before God, crying out to him from the bottom of our souls. And if we can weep and find Him, then we may also "arise and go."

681. Grief

I tell you, hopeless grief is passionless;

That only men incredulous of despair,

Half-taught in anguish, through the midnight air

Beat upward to God's throne in loud access

Of shrieking and reproach. Full desertness,

In souls as countries, lieth silent-bare

Under the blanching, vertical eye-glare

Of the absolute Heavens. Deep-hearted man, express

Grief for thy Dead in silence like to death—

Most like a monumental statue set

In everlasting watch and moveless woe

Till itself crumble to the dust beneath.

Touch it; the marble eyelids are not wet:

If it could weep, it could arise and go.

~Elizabeth Browning

And Tagore, Asia's first Nobel Prize Laureate in Literature reminds us of God's eternal perspective that soothes our deep grief...

Say not in grief that she is no more

but say in thankfulness that she was.

A death is not the extinguishing of a light,

but the putting out of the lamp

because the dawn has come.

Friday’s Faith - Acceptance Amidst Emotional Pain…

Friday’s Faith

Acceptance Amidst Emotional Pain…

"If I allowed My Own Son be wounded,
so too could I not allow your own child
be torn, cut down, and fatally wounded
as well? Don't by th' Enemy be beguiled...

Death on this earth's not always meek and mild.
Violent death does not mean I've abandoned.
Violent death does not mean I've looked away.
Violent death does not mean it was random.
Though Satan kills, know I have the last say.
I am the Lord Thy God; I'll have My way.

"Life from your perspective won't always make sense.
My people did not expect My Son to die...
Now you see He had to make recompense—
I need you to trust when you don't know 'why'!
Your child is with Me! Can you not comply?"

My Lord and my God, You are God, not I.
You designed her, made her, saved her, not I.
You fulfilled Your purpose in her, not I.
To know You love her ensures I'll comply...
May Your grace abound in my heart…ev'n as I die.

In pouring over scripture for all these months and now even years, I am appalled at the "cheap grace" that I had unwittingly allowed myself to fall for. Yes, I had no problem with the base of my faith's foundation: Trust, Love, Faith, Prayer, Belief, Hope. Those are comforting concepts for my heart to bask in.

But what has jumped out at me between the lines of my self-deception are the very clear scriptures that delineate what will be the life of ours while we are here on this earth. Whether we are living a life of sin or a life of righteousness (in Christ), we still have to deal with the presence of sin on this earth, and the curse of death that has fallen on mankind through Adam's original sin.

I will have to watch loved ones die, some suddenly, violently. Others, I will have to watch decay right before my eyes. I HATE IT! These are people I love and cherish, and I want none of Satan's harm to fall on them. Why, O why, O Lord, do we have to watch evil seemingly prevail in the lives of those we love, and indeed, in the lives of those You love?!

But God has reminded me, sin is here; the prince of darkness reigns over this earth, and I will have to contend with his devastations. If God's own precious Son had to contend with Satan's evil, did I think I would be excused or exempt from the curse? Did I think I would be privileged to bask in God's love and not see much evil in this world, even evil plaguing those I love? I had my head in the sand. I was living in "la-la-land" with my "perfect little family."

So now, as I read scripture, the words jump out at me. The curse of evil is here on this earth. God will not remove this curse totally until Christ returns to bring everything under His authority. Yes, God is omnipotent --all-powerful. Yes, God is omniscient --all-knowing. He is not blinded to any of Satan's shenanigans. And God is omnipresent --everywhere at all times. He was not looking the other way when my child was killed. He saw what Satan was up to, and He allowed it. And yet, He was there to scoop my child up off the hard ground, and into His soft loving arms that night.

God is love. There is nothing HE ever does to us that is not ALL-LOVING. But He allows evil for a time. I don't know why. I know He wants to allow time for more of His created ones to turn to Him for their eternal hope and well-being, to be washed in His Son's blood, to be restored to fellowship with their Creator. And He didn't make us robots, so He gave us a free will. Not all were blessed to be in a loving, Christian home like I was where I heard about God from the day I was born. But He longs to give all of His created ones the chance to hear about Him and His love for them. So He waits.

While He waits, we continue to see suffering and evil of all kinds. But He waits in love for those who will some day respond to His outstretched arms just like I did when I was seven years old, just like Merry Katherine did when she was six years old.

So, though I hate it, that I have to watch loved ones suffer and even die or be killed, I must also trust that God's world is much bigger than mine, and His plans are much higher than mine. And even when we suffer, He promises we will be blessed ultimately many times over in His presence. I must remember earth is not heaven--this earth is not my home. Heaven is where I belong. I cannot SEE it, but I am called to BELIEVE without seeing. There would be no need for FAITH if I could easily see God's ways.
