Wednesday's Woe - Who Are We Now? ~Angie and Tommy Prince

Wednesday's Woe

Who Are We Now?

~Angie and Tommy Prince

We are almost seven years into our Child-Loss Grief and Trauma, yet we are still discovering who we are.

In Child-Loss, you lose more than just your child.

I've lost being able to relate to my family the way I used to, as some family members have gotten so toxic that I had to remove myself from any interaction with them. As I always say, "Trauma Mamas (and Papas) must avoid Drama Mamas (and Papas) at all costs!!!"

I've lost the ability to get a good, full-night's sleep within a consecutive number of hours; I can get the needed amount now, but I can count on there being breaks in between when I will need to process my grief over my child, or the grief caused by my secondary injuries (e.g., toxic family members saying hateful things because they totally misrepresent my grief and what it takes out of me.)

Assumptive beliefs have been challenged, and they have to be faced, re-worked and worked through so  as to discern which beliefs are true and which were a bill-of-goods that we unwittingly bought into but ultimately would yield us no good fruit. For instance, there are different translations of the Bible, God's Holy Word. Generally, that is a good thing, to be able to look at His Word from different perspectives. But there can be error swallowed without realizing it if we don't read carefully and within the context of the passage's original meaning.
Look at any one version of the Bible, let's take The Message for example: Eugene Peterson wrote it, and the tome is an amazing accomplishment. Peterson seems to be an authentic Christian, loving God and living in a sweet personal relationship with Him, but when I as a griever read his translation of 1 John 5, as I read "the Evil One cannot touch" (our child), I was infuriated!

Read this excerpt from The Message, out of 1 John 5:18-21:

"The God-begotten are also the God-protected. The Evil One can’t lay a hand on them. We know that we are held firm by God; it’s only the people of the world who continue in the grip of the Evil One."

Of course the Evil One can touch our child; she is dead because of him! The Evil One touched me because he killed my child! But I think the real meaning of God's Word is that the Enemy cannot touch my child's soul: once she belongs to God, which she does, she is His, and Satan cannot touch that relationship enough to destroy it forever. She is God's, and God protects the eternal soul of my child such that Satan cannot "touch" it, in an eternal sense anyway.

We have made adjustments without really knowing… to try to survive, but the need for these adjustments really come to light when there's a "have-to" out there like a professional seminar that one MUST go to for professional ethics requirements to be met, or a living child's birthday that you don't want to miss just because of your grief and its constraints upon the body. These events, though wonderful opportunities in and of themselves, can at times be very destructive to the equilibrium we have striven to develop.

For example, I got to the professional seminar today, and realized very soon into it (since I was able to get zero hours of sleep last night) that I could not concentrate to the degree I needed to retain the invaluable information, so I talked with the instructor. The instructor was very kind and compassionate and showed me some online options that have just opened up for this particular seminar which provide a way for me to achieve this professional continuing-education requirement within the confines of my own home!

Child-Loss presents us with many losses. There is the inordinate loss that comes just from the physical loss of our child that seems to throw all of our lives upside down, and turn them inside out. Then we have what we call the "Invisible Disability" that comes with such an inordinate loss with which we must continually grapple to undergo the "normal" constraints of life. Our health becomes compromised. Our daily functions become challenges. Our belief-systems have run amuck, but they are crucial to our facing our grief, finding our comfort, knowing who we are despite our shortcomings, and to receiving our most basic needs for God's love and involvement in our lives, so we find we must expend the necessary energy for our compromised belief systems to be overhauled and reworked. Life itself can be hard enough, but when you throw in all these complications, life itself becomes almost overwhelming.

"The tears flow from my heart and turn into a river.
The river has many bends, rocks and jagged
edges, waves, and reflections.
It reveals to me strength and surrender,
love never-ending,
and the new person emerging
from this thing called grief.
Grief does not define me but
it has transformed me."

Dear Lord,

Please teach me how to be a mother to a child that is no longer in my arms but in yours. Teach me how to send sweet kisses up to the heavens to my beautiful baby. Let her feel my love and know how much she is missed.

Lord, please teach me to embrace my child when there is nothing here for me to hold except the memories and dreams for the future that have been shattered.

Lord, please teach me how to release my anger into the wind and let the rage echo into the night until it dissolves into the darkness, so I can sleep and wake with peace instead of pain.

Lord, please teach me how to release my guilt and struggle with my thoughts of what should have been. My thoughts have imprisoned me and taken me captive but I am ready to be freed to begin to allow love back into my life.

Lord, please teach me how to find the strength, to be patient with people when they say things that are so hurtful about my loss. Hopefully, they will never feel this anguish but maybe I can teach them the words that would allow me to feel embraced instead of attacked.

Lord, please teach me to discover the beauty that has been overgrown with pain. Please help me touch the beautiful roses without being pierced by the thorns. Allow me to see the beauty of heaven reflected in my daughter’s eyes.

Lord, please help me to let the tears fall until they form a river which can bring me to a new place of hope and renewal. Please show me how to open my heart and let love from friends and family pour in to display a rainbow of comfort, light, and support.

Lord, please send me sweet dreams where I can hear her sweet laughter tickling the air, where I can look deep into her beautiful eyes filled with pure joy, I can feel her arms wrap around my neck tightly, and I can whisper softly in her ear, “I Love you my sweet baby girl.”

Amen

Tuesday's Trust - The Rains May Come...

Tuesday's Trust

The Rains May Come...

Lying in my bed early this morning, I was contemplating the news I had heard the night before from my son who is here visiting this week; Nathan brought news to me from my hometown in Athens, Georgia that my handicapped brother had gone to the hospital recently with a collapsed lung. No one from home I guess had had the courage to call me with all the grief that is already on my plate.

So I was thinking, is this the way it's going to be Lord, from here on out... just one loss after another of our loved ones to face?! (As you know depressing thoughts creep in so easily in the depths of our already aggrieved hearts.) So the following poem started coming to me from my Lord's heart, so I jumped up, turned on the light and began writing...

The Rains May Come...

The rains may come,

I'm right here My child.

The rains may come,

But on your child, I've smiled.

Sorrows come, they fill the sky,

But in your heart, I bring my sun.

Troubles come, darken your sky,

But piercing your Dark, My Son.

Though all else fails, lean on Me.

My love withstands your tempestuous sea.

Though all else fails, lean on Me,

Though Darkness falls, Me ~ you'll see.

Tuesday's Trust - Time for Some Major Weed Killing… - Agitation Amidst Grief's Identity Crisis

Tuesday's Trust

Time for Some Major Weed Killing…

Agitation Amidst Grief's Identity Crisis

Yes, it's time for some major weed killing… not only in my gardens, but Sunday morning revealed to me the horrific need for some major weed killing… in my heart. I am so ANGRY!!! (Is anyone else angry in their grief? Aaaagh!)

First of all, I don't know who I am these days...

Who am I physically?

With all the grief, I don't even know what size clothes I wear! It's hard to buy clothes when you don't know who you are physically any more. I have dwindled down to almost nothing, and have to make sure I even remember to eat. (For example, today is Sunday, it is right now 4:39 in the afternoon, and I have eaten NOTHING so far! I forget to eat!!!) And I have to work out daily with aerobic exercise to help my poor brain that is trying to overcome this intensive trauma we've all experienced…

Who am I spiritually?

Grief has sent me into plumbing the depths of The Person of God, so I feel that I am much deeper spiritually as Child-Loss Grief really requires a deeper faith and trust. But how does God put up with me on a day like today when I've just about thrown everything out the window that He has diligently taught me? He is so loving and so patient, and I am so unworthy, but as He said, He doesn't come to call the righteous, but to call sinners unto Him… (Thank You God for Your undying love and grace!!!)

Who am I emotionally?

And what is my life's work now that I have been severely traumatized?

I am spent emotionally. My heart is just broken. I am easily triggered. I am easily offended (grief does a great job of exposing who our genuine friends and loved ones are, because we CANNOT tolerate hard hearts around us… AT ALL! If you're mean-spirited, in the least, SCRAM!).

And what is my life's work? What work can I actually do? I am a psychotherapist, specially trained in intensive trauma cases, THE most difficult to treat, THE most dangerous to treat, THE most harrowing to treat, THE most arduous to treat. Have you ever heard of the diagnostic term, "Borderline Personality Disorder" (BPD)? Severe trauma cases include this disorder, and the diagnosis itself causes most therapists, even the kindest of souls, to REFUSE to render treatment to such individuals; these clients will test you and try you and manipulate you and lie to you and threaten you, even worse-- threaten to harm themselves if they're upset with you, etc. etc. etc. (Actually, it makes perfect sense for them to test their therapist so adamantly, as life has treated them horribly, so why should they expect to be able to trust a therapist? Why should they take the risk to let anyone else get close to them? Why should they think the therapist will be any different from all of the abusers in their life? But still…) It is treacherous territory for the therapist, and I have to ask myself, do I really have the emotional stamina for this any more? Who knows?

But I have called around, and all of the other Christian psychotherapists in this city REFUSE to take on another borderline, ever. I even called a psychiatrist this week who very graciously taught me to work with such cases many many years ago, (he admitted to me at the time that no graduate schools teach us how to do this work because they think it is so rare (it actually is NOT), so for those of us who dare to walk the arduous journey with these hurting clients, we all have had to learn to do this work by 'on-the-job' training). But then the psychiatrist admitted to me when I tracked him down this week,

"Angie, I gave up on these people a long time ago; they just seemed to get worse and worse, and there is no medication to 'fix' the disorder."

(Of course there isn't, he agreed; it is only treatable with psychotherapy, and psychiatrists don't do psychotherapy!) But he does at least does try to treat some of their symptoms, and I'll take that. It was just majorly disappointing that the one mental health professional I have found in this town who understands these precious souls better than any others, really, has given up on them!!! (I feel like the Annie Sullivan (Macy) who worked so closely with Helen Keller when things often felt impossible; the disorder is as volatile a situation as that, but more!) So BPD is my specialty as well as its counterpart DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) - picture Sybil… Very heavy duty emotional work, but now I am trying to do it as a Grieving Mother???? Can that even be done???

And then, I have to tangle with the insurance companies who really don't like the idea of intensive treatment for anyone, and IF they will allow the intensive treatment (which is certainly what these disorders require), they will barely pay you anything for it… Aaagh. (And as you know, it is hard enough for us to make a living these days with our own grief forcing us to pound out a different way of working than before the death of our child.)

{After writing the rough draft of this post yesterday -- and before posting it publicly -- today my client's insurance company graciously rose to the challenge they see that is involved in this young woman's life, and are assisting me in a much more gracious manner. God does move mountains when we submit to Him! (He had quite a few things to point out to me yesterday to get me off my "high horse" before I called the insurance company today to see if we could negotiate a more equitable arrangement...) And then, it seems to me, HE moved a mighty big mountain on mine and my client's behalf!!! (Thank You, God!!!)}

Well, back to yesterday, at the height of my angst, I totally took all of this pent-up frustration out on the one person who would take it from me… which happens to be the same person who least deserves to catch it from me, and that is… my loving husband. Wow. Ain't grief fun? Let's just dump this animosity on another grieving parent - way to go, Ang! Fortunately he loves me, and we are making our way through it, but ouch. What is this antagonizing anger that is overtaking my heart??? Time to find the weed kill spray! And quick!

Walking Through the Valley Today

~Angie Bennett Prince, 2/27/2012

Walking through the valley today, my heart in the pits,

near despair, surrounded by shattered hopes and dreams,

One loss leads to another and another, or so it seems...

Barely navigating through this horrid valley of the Shadow of Death,

Taking it out on all around me, it seems.

Lord, I only hold on by a thread;

Without Your help, I am left, filled with dread.

Lift my spirits, keep my eyes on You,

Without Your help, Lord, I'll never make it through…

But You promise, though loss looms larger than me,

You have conquered Death;

From all this fear and dread of loss upon loss, I can be free…

Though I am winded, out of breath,

With Your presence, I can say,

"Yea, though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death,

I will fear no evil…for THOU art with me…"

O Lord, please hover near me…

Ever attend to me, hear your wounded child's plea.

The Lowest Valley

~The Isaacs

Lord, I don't want to do one thing on my own

Put me where You want me Lord, where I belong

And give me the strength, Lord, to do Thy perfect will

So when I'm in the lowest valley, I can climb the highest hill

Lord I want to be what You want me to be

Lord I want to do the things You want me to do

Lord help me stay in the center of Thy will

So when I'm in the lowest valley,

I can climb the highest hill.

This world, it gets more wicked every day

People's hearts have grown so cold,

forgotten how to pray!

But if I live to be a hundred

I'll keep falling to Your hand

Until You come and take me Home

To that Promised Land.

Lord I want to be what You want me to be

Lord I want to do the things You want me to do

Lord, help me stay in the center of Thy will

And when I'm in the lowest valley,

I can climb the highest hill.

And when I'm in the lowest valley,

I can climb the highest hill.

Through the Valley

~The Isaacs

So you're lookin' for a way to quench your thirst

to ease your mind, to cool the burn.

It's hard to face the road you're going down

And you're tempted to turn around.

Don't give up, just put one foot in front of the other

And just keep walkin'

Through the valley

Up the mountain

Toward the river,

Sweet redemption.

It's a measure of strength,

a shadow of grace,

a matter of faith

That'll keep you goin'

Just gotta keep on,

Gotta keep on, keep on movin'

Through the valley

Love is waiting on the other Side

It calls your name

Don't break your stride

Freedom's gonna taste twice as sweet

when you get to where you need to be

Don't lose hope;

Just hold on with all of your heart

And just keep prayin'

Through the valley

Up the mountain

Toward the river,

Sweet redemption

It's a measure of strength,

a shadow of grace,

a matter of faith

that'll keep you goin'

you just gotta keep on, gotta keep on,

keep on movin'

Through the valley, yeah

It's a measure of strength,

a shadow of grace,

a matter of faith

that'll keep you goin'

you just gotta keep on, gotta keep on,

gotta keep on, gotta keep on,

keep on movin'

Through the valley

Through the valley

You just gotta keep on,

gotta keep on, keep on movin'

Through the valley

Through the valley

Friday's Faith - More Losses, More Crosses

Friday's Faith

More Losses, More Crosses

The cleft is getting wider between us,

Our world's have fallen so far apart,

The clouds are getting thicker, ominous,

The passage between a soft and hard heart...

What have I done to you, but lost my child?

Is this then today's unpardonable sin?

My heart~though broken~ is tender and mild

While your heart seems harder, with bricks within.

Though I've lost my child, have you lost your heart?

My heavy loss fell outside my control.

My child's in heaven, we're so far apart,

But she and I can commune, soul to soul.

Yes, there have been many changes in me...

I cannot tolerate power struggles...

Where is your heart? Did it sail out to sea?

The changes in you my heart befuddles.

Does death expose continental divide,

Or does it shed light on one full of pride?

I lost my child, but I still have my soul;

I look for your heart and just see a hole.

I'll find my child again; I pray you'll find your soul.

We find relationships falling away,

People punitive if they can't have their way...

Loving them, we're left to face more losses,

Upon child-loss, left to bear more crosses...

Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Galatians 6:2

Friday's Faith - One Week Ago, You Died ~ When the Child-Loss Mother Loses Her Mother

"If only my anguish could be weighed

and all my misery be placed on the scales!

It would surely outweigh the sand of the seas."

Friday's Faith

One Week Ago, You Died

When the Child-Loss Mother Loses Her Mother

One week ago, you died.

What a chasm spans that gap.

That day in Heav'n, bows were tied;

One week later, I've come unwrapped.

Breaking bonds of mother and child

Must be earth's greatest taboo!

My life's source by death beguiled?

~Master plan of Satan's coup.

And yet True Life took on death

That He might restore life's breath.

She who dies, nevertheless lives:

By death, Life, eternal life gives!

So today, though I am dying inside,

I rejoice -- Mother, in His bosom hides.

*****

A comforting word from a fellow Child-Loss mother:

I am praying for you today that God will lift you up and comfort you as only he can.

Job said in Job 6:1-3: Then Job replied: "If only my anguish could be weighed and all my misery be placed on the scales! It would surely outweigh the sand of the seas."

Isaiah 61:1 the word of the Lord says...He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted. One of the meanings of the word bind in this passage is to wrap around".

David wrote in the psalms "If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. Psalm 119:92

My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life. Psalm 119:50.

Father, thank You that You will "wrap" Your arms around this child-loss-mother, now a mother-loss-child.
