Tuesday's Trust - A Grieving Father Writes...

Tuesday's Trust

A Grieving Father Writes...

Victor Hugo: I will see that instant until I die

[Written at Villequier, on the Seine, 4 September 1847, where his 19-year-old daughter was buried near where she drowned in the Seine, four years earlier]

Carlos_halfeld_weeping_willows_2

Now that Paris, its cobblestones and marble,
and its mists and its roofs are quite far from my eyes;
now that I am under tree branches,
and can daydream of the beauty of the skies;

Now that I am coming out, pale but victorious,
from the mourning that made my soul dark,
and I feel the peace of great Nature
entering my heart;

Alone_by_just_a_robin_at_flickr

Now that, seated at the edge of the waves,
moved by this superb and tranquil horizon,
I can examine deep truths inside me
and look at the flowers that are on the lawn;

Now, O God! that I have the somber calm
to be able from now on
to look with my eyes on the stone where I know in the shadow
she is sleeping forever;

Now that, touched by these divine sights,
Plains, forests, rocks, little valleys, silvery river,
seeing my smallness and seeing your miracles,
I come back to my senses before their immensity;

I come to you, Lord, father who must be believed in;
peaceful now, I bring you
the pieces of that heart all full of your glory
that you broke;

Crystal_heart_by_hb19_flickr

I come to you, Lord! confessing that you are
good, merciful, indulgent and kind, O living God!
I admit that you alone know what you do.
And that man is nothing but a reed that quivers in the wind;

I say that the tomb that closes upon the dead
opens the heavens;
and that what we here below take for the end
is the beginning;

Exit_sortie_by_c_p_storm_at_flick_3

I acknowledge on my knees that you alone, awesome father,
own the infinite, the real, the absolute;
I acknowledge that it is good, that it is right
that my heart has bled, since God willed it!

I resist no more whatever happens to me
by your will.
The soul from grief to grief, Man from shore to shore,
rolls to eternity.

We never see but a single side of things;
the other plunges into the night of frightening mystery.
Man bears the yoke without knowing why.
All he sees is short, useless and fleeting.

Dead_butterfly_by_bluegallery_flick

You make loneliness return always
around all his footsteps.
You did not want him to have certainty
nor joy here below!

As soon as he owns something, fate takes it away.
Nothing is given to him, in his speedy days,
for him to make a home and say:
Here is my house, my field and my loved ones!

He must see for a short time all that his eyes see;
he grows old without support.
Since things are so, it’s because they must be so;
I admit it, I admit it!

The world is dark, O God! the unchanging harmony
is wrought of tears as well as of songs;
Man is but an atom in this infinite shadow,
night where the good rise, where the bad fall.

I know you have far more to do
than to feel sorry for us all,
and that a child who dies, to its mother’s despair,
is nothing to you!

Baby_heath_entropia_at_flickr

I know that fruit falls to the wind that shakes it,
that birds lose their feathers and flowers their fragrance,
that Creation is a great wheel
that cannot move without crushing someone;

months, days, billows of the sea, eyes that weep
pass under the blue sky;
grass must grow and children die;
I know it, O God!

In your heavens, above the sphere of the clouds,
deep in that still, sleeping blue,
perhaps you are making unknown things
where Man’s pain is an ingredient.

Hubble_2

Perhaps it is useful in your numberless plans
that charming creatures
go away, carried off by the dark whirlwind
of black events.

Our shadowy destinies go underneath huge laws
which nothing disconcerts and nothing moves.
You cannot have sudden mercies
that would disturb the world, O God, calm spirit!

I beg you, O God! to look at my soul,
and to consider
that humbly as a child and gently as a woman,
I come to adore you!

Consider again how I have, since dawn,
worked, fought, thought, walked, struggled,
explaining Nature to Man who knew nothing of it,
lighting everything with your clarity;

Selfportrait_by_kronoskid_flickr

that, facing hate and anger,
I have done my task here below,
that I could not expect this wage,
that I could not

foresee that you too, on my yielding head,
would let fall heavily your triumphant arm,
and that you who saw how little joy I have,
would take my child away so quickly!

How a soul thus struck is likely to wail,
how I could curse,
and cast my cries at you like a child
throwing stones in the sea!

Consider how one doubts, O God! when one suffers,
how the eye that weeps too much is blinded,
how a being plunged by grief into the blackest pit,
seeing you no more, cannot contemplate you.

And it cannot be that a Man, when he sinks
under affliction,
has in his wit the sober serenity
of the constellations!

Orion_2

Today, I who was weak as a mother,
I bend to your feet before your open skies.
I feel myself enlightened in my bitter sadness
by a better outlook on the universe.

Lord, I realize that Man is crazy
if he dares complain;
I’ve stopped accusing, I’ve stopped cursing,
but let me weep!

Grief_by_eddie_p_at_flickr

Alas! let the tears run down from my eyes,
since you have made Men for this!
Let me lean over this cold stone
and say to my child: Do you feel that I am here?

Let me speak to her, bent over her remains,
in the evening when all is still,
as if, reopening her celestial eyes in her night,
this angel could hear me!

Alas! turning an envious eye on the past,
while nothing here below can console me,
I keep seeing that moment in my life
when I saw her open her wings and fly off!

I will see that instant until I die,
the instant, no tears needed!
where I cried: the child I had a minute ago—
What? I don’t have her any more?

Do not be irritated that I am like this,
O my God! this wound bled for so long!
The anguish in my heart is still the strongest thing,
and my heart is submissive, but not resigned.

Do not be angry! Brows claimed by sorrow,
mortals subject to tears,
for us it is not easy to withdraw our souls
from these great griefs.

Lylou_puts_lip_balm_on_her_father_2

You see, we really need our children,
Lord; when one has seen in one’s life, some morning,
in the midst of cares, hardships, miseries,
and of the shadow our fate casts over us,

how a child appears, a dear sacred head,
a small joyful creature,
so beautiful one thinks a door to heaven has opened
when it arrives;

when for sixteen years one has watched this other self
grow in loveable grace and sweet reason,
when one has realized that this child one loves
makes daylight in our soul and in our home,

that it is the only joy that remains here below
of all that one has dreamed of;
consider that it is a very sad thing
to watch it going away!

Tuesday's Trust - "The Sharp-Edged Remains of Our Shattered Dreams"

"Sometimes stories don't have happy endings.
Even love stories.
Maybe especially love stories."

Tuesday's Trust

"The Sharp-Edged
Remains
of
Our Shattered Dreams"

How then shall we "live"?
Our child has died---died---dead---gone!
Does not anyone understand our devastation?
We who love---no crime is it?--our beloved child
Seem left to sit in the ashes of her remains
To awaken every day only to face---
She is not here!
From this sweet earth, she is gone!
All dreams for her seemingly dashed upon the ground!
Why would we not be devastated?
Of course we are!
We are left to flail away in "the sharp-edged remains of our shattered dreams."

What a destiny for parents whose continued love
for their child is now deemed a "crime."
"Let it go. Move on. Stop the tears."
No way! We will always love our child,
and therefore we will always miss her, long for her, and always know she is gone!
And with that missing, and longing, and knowing,
we will cry. There will be tears.
Of course there will be tears.
Our love does not stop . . .
while we try to find our place now
amidst these
"sharp-edged remains of our shattered  dreams."

And where is our LORD in all this?

He is there---amidst the pain---
Amidst her remains---
Sitting with us, weeping with us, loving us,
comforting us, and drawing our hearts, our faces,
our lives upward to see Him, to see the
Hope that He has promised…

"She is with Me ---
I am holding her
even as I am holding you ~
She is safe,
She is loved,
She is with Me…
Longingly awaiting you.

"The love is still there;
Bask in it.
It is deeper, stronger, more understanding.
She sees your pain. She knows your pain.
She too longs for you.
Bask in that love.
Bask in My love.
Bask in your love for one another,
a love that grows deeper every day.
And know, that love will blossom
into fruition that you cannot imagine.
That love is not in vain.
That love is from Me---it is sacred---and it will remain.
Bask in that---even as you are in pain . . ."

"The Sharp-Edged Remains of Our Shattered Dreams" ---
The title of my poem is from a quote by writer Ken Gire:
"But until the day when we return to that place (Paradise)
or the day when Jesus returns to take us there,
we must live our lives under the rainbow . . .
where the road ahead is not paved with yellow bricks.
Sometimes it has no bricks at all,
only the sharp-edged remains of our shattered dreams."

Tuesday's Trust ~ Amidst our Raging Storm...

Tuesday's Trust

Amidst our Raging Storm...

"Let (us) praise Him with dancing and make music to Him..."

~Psalm 149:3

O Lord, You’re such a tender God, attending our deepest needs, hearing our heartfelt cries, lifting our spirits from the miry muck, even as continuously, but gently, You ever are mending our broken hearts and lives.

As You nurture us in our tumultuous vulnerability, You call us to the dance, enabling us to praise You.

Help us to remember even Your very faithful Daniel was not spared the lion’s den, but You were there with him, silencing the ravenous roars with Your healing presence…

By the faith You have given us, may we entrust ourselves to You, “knowing” in our heart of hearts, You stand with us as well…

Let (us) praise Your name with dancing

and make music to You...

even, and especially,

Amidst our Raging Storm.

Tuesday's Trust - "I Am Come to Heal..."

Tuesday's Trust

"I Am Come to Heal..."

The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised...

~Jesus

~Luke 4:18 KJV

~~~
O Lord, quicken our broken hearts to rest in Thee, for You alone heal us ever so gently throughout our lifetime on earth, yet culminate our healing fully when You wipe all our tears away, forever!
Thank You for Your faithful, tender, healing love poured out on us daily...
Truly, we need Thee every hour!
2And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.3And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying,
"Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, 4and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away."
Tuesday's Trust - Heart Scars in The Lepers' Colony
Tuesday's Trust
Heart Scars
in
The Lepers' Colony
Heart Scars in The Lepers' Colony
We of the lepers' colony know who we are;
We limp, we falter, we need to hide…
We notice: our friends, too, retreat afar…
So to tend our wounds, in our Lord we abide ~
He is our safety: He accepts where we are;
He embraces our honesty; He comes alongside.
We of the lepers' colony know who we are;
Our wounds, too deep, others run far and wide
Yet we know deep love must bleed out, though it creates scar after scar,
So our own wounds we tend, and to other lepers confide.
As we groan and we limp and cannot run far,
We narrow our world, and make time to abide
In the deep Spirit of God who comes alongside.
He too knows deep grief as His Son left His side
To go and love others, and suffer Love's scars
Even to death, so He could bring us alongside
To come to His Father, and in His love abide.
(He suffers when each of us lambs, running afar,
Afraid of our own needs, in fear we hide,
Not letting Him come near to see who we are,
And yet, we need a Savior both to rescue and chide
To draw us to Him, and to face who we are.)
Without facing our pain, and our own hurt denied,
We cheat ourselves, allowing Him to bear all our scars,
Till with Love He o'ercomes us and opens our eyes
To know we need Him to help us face ourselves, and carry Love's scars.
So now too we cherish our pain gushing from inside,
Though it torments and wounds, healing over into each scar,
For each scar represents the Love we still have for our child
And reminds us of our mothering and fathering, for that's who we are.
With all the joys and the pains, we come to our child's side;
In embracing all the emotions, we feel our pierced side,
Yet we know it's all worth it, for that's who we are,
Mothers and Fathers who love, rendered lepers with scars…
We of the lepers' colony know who we are,
But we rejoice despite pain, knowing the love treasured within each scar!
Jesus, despite His perfection in Heaven, today still retains Love's scars!
So when we see them in Heaven, we'll be reminded each time
Of such love poured out for us, surpassing any other love by far…
So perhaps, when sprung into Heav'n from our lepers' colony, we too will still bear Love's scars…
Perhaps our children will be overjoyed to see the depths of our love poured out for them within each of our Love-filled scars.
Tuesday's Trust - How Do We Have Hope without Despair? ~ "The Delight of Despair" ~Elizabeth Haworth
Tuesday's Trust
How Do We Have Hope without Despair?
Part Three
The Delight Of Despair
~Elizabeth Haworth
“And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead.”
It may be that like the apostle John you know Jesus Christ intimately, when suddenly He appears with no familiar characteristic at all, and the only thing you can do is to fall at His feet as dead. There are times when God cannot reveal Himself in any other way than in His majesty, and it is the awfulness of the vision which brings you to the delight of despair;
(I)f you are ever to be raised up, it must be by the hand of God.
“He laid His right hand upon me.”
In the midst of the awfulness, a touch comes, and you know it is the right hand of Jesus Christ. The right hand not of restraint nor of correction nor of chastisement, but the right hand of the Everlasting Father.
Whenever His hand is laid upon you, it is ineffable peace and comfort, the sense that “underneath are the everlasting arms,” full of sustaining and comfort and strength.
When once His touch comes, nothing at all can cast you into fear again.
In the midst of all His ascended glory the Lord Jesus comes to speak to an insignificant disciple, and to say – “Fear not.”
His tenderness is ineffably sweet. Do I know Him like that?
Watch some of the things that strike despair. There is despair in which there is no delight, no horizon, no hope of anything brighter; but the delight of despair comes when I know that “in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing.” (Romans 7:18)
I delight to know that there is that in me which must fall prostrate before God when He manifests Himself, and if I am ever to be raised up it must be by the hand of God.
God can do nothing for me until I get to the limit of the possible.
{Some highlights and indentions, mine}
Thank you to Elizabeth Haworth for today's devotional thoughts.
Yes, often we will find ourselves in a state of despair, but thanks be to our LORD, we do know and believe we have ahead of us, truly, a living hope:
Praise to God for a Living Hope
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,
5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.
7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
8 Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and even though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
9 for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Tuesday's Trust - How Do We Have Hope without Despair? - Part Two
The LORD is there to rescue all who are discouraged and have given up Hope.
~Psalm 34:18 CEV
Tuesday's Trust
How Do We Have Hope without Despair?
Part Two
Despair is fleeting; Hope is eternal.
~Angie Prince
~~~

We cannot appreciate The Light without first being aware of The Dark.
~Rollin Prince

~~~
Despair haunts me at times. Especially when I get into a place of emptiness and purposelessness.
At those times, I don't know who I am; I don't know what I am capable of doing; I am challenged emotionally, mentally, physically, spiritually, and in strength and endurance. Grief and Trauma are depleting in and of themselves. It doesn't take much more impetus to lose my way and plummet on down into Despair.
Then when I go before my God in prayer, I immediately feel regret that I have so little to offer Him as I know He sacrificed everything for me.
But then my LORD Jesus comes to me in compassion engulfing me with love. Of course He knows the despair that comes in the fight with Death and Evil. Of course our Father God knows the despair that comes with Child-Loss.
With such sweet understanding and compassion coming my way, the tears begin to flow, and I am reminded that ALL of this suffering is because of Love for my Child, and that Love matters.
After all, what is our God? God IS Love.
Then I begin, again, to recognize: My suffering has meaning. My suffering is not for naught!
Why did our God allow Himself the suffering of Child-Loss? Why did our LORD allow Himself the suffering of Death? ALL for LOVE. ALL for LOVE. ALL for LOVE.
Why do I grieve my Child? ALL for LOVE.
My Hope returns. Our God values us and our suffering so much that He declares in His word,
"God draws close to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
Psalm 34:18
~~~

 "God heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds."
Psalm 147:3

Why is God so attendant to the brokenhearted? And why would He store our tears in a bottle?

YOU keep track of all my sorrows. YOU have collected all my tears in YOUR bottle. You have recorded each one in YOUR book.
Psalm 56:8

Why would He collect our tears in His bottle?

He knows all of it... the tears, the suffering, the agony, and the depletion, is because of LOVE, Love for my child.

He understands, and He embraces me.

It was because of God's love for us that He willingly gave up His only Son to die for us so that we might live, eternally, with Him.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting LIFE.
John 3:16

The world wants to shame me for my weakness and helplessness. They want it to go away, and for me to "move on" away from my suffering...

The LORD understands my suffering. He suffered too.

The Bible clearly tells us it was because of Jesus' love for us that He laid down His life for us, that we can live again, forever with Him.

This is how we know what LOVE is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us.

1 John 3:16

And by His suffering, we also can heal. The Bible even tells us,

"By His wounds we are healed."

Isaiah 53:5

Our Heavenly Father calls us to be like Jesus, take up our cross, be willing to suffer. Suffering has meaning. Suffering... because of Love.

And that is exactly who God says He IS… God IS Love.

He suffered for Love. And we will suffer for Love.

God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example and you must follow in His steps.

1 Peter 2:21

But His Love gives meaning to our suffering, restoring our Hope…

I begin to understand anew the value of my suffering. Even though it depletes me, my suffering has Meaning.

And God begins pouring His hope back into my heart...

And Hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His Love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.
Romans 5:5

~~~
May our LORD touch you and fill you with His joy and peace along with His Hope…
