Wednesday's Woe - Out For The Count...

hope …is what keeps me alive

Wednesday's Woe

Out For The Count...

In July, 2011, my husband Tommy was diagnosed with cancer.

In January, 2012, Rollin, our first-born son, was diagnosed with cancer.

Then, in July of 2013, Tommy was diagnosed with cancer… again.

3 strikes, and I was out for the count.

Something happened with this third declaration of this dreaded enemy, Cancer, trying to ravage my loved ones, that it knocked me to my knees.

Literally.

As I got down on my knees to once again make my urgent cries to Heaven, I hit Stalemate.

Suddenly, I didn't know how to pray.

I felt assaulted by Fear.

For reasons unknown, this time my urgent cries I had prayed for my precious child, my daughter Merry Katherine, came to the forefront... And, as urgent as those cries had been to my Heavenly Father to keep her safe, it felt, at that almost-seven-year anniversary of her death, that my cries had been denied...

Suddenly, I felt an abject helplessness in daring to raise my cries to my Lord yet again. What if these prayers were answered with a Denial?

I couldn't take it. I couldn't risk yet another LOSS of another precious loved one.

As much as I loved God and had always felt I could trust him, suddenly, those seven years, and 3 cancer strikes later, I hit the proverbial wall. Spiritually, I couldn't move.

I felt stymied. How was I to trust my prayers this time? Urgent prayers years ago that seemingly culminated in death… How could I risk that again? I couldn't. So I had nowhere to turn.

This spiritual drought that felt like a winter-freeze-suddenly-dropped-on-my-heart, leaving me quaking.

It turned into quite a long season of drought…

Thankfully, so thankfully, our God is faithful. It is only in Him that true Hope originates. It was not up to me to dredge up some hope, for in the state I was in, that couldn't be done (as if it can ever be done in the flesh!).

But thanks be to God that His Word declares His truth to us,

The Lord is there to rescue all who are discouraged and have given up hope.
~Psalm 34:18 CEV

And, Rescue, He did.

For thus said the high and exalted One, inhabiting eternity, and holy is His name: "In the high and holy place I dwell, And with the bruised and humble of spirit, To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of bruised ones,"

~Psalm 34:18, YLT

What an amazing, faithful God we serve!!!

And so, Lord, where do I put my hope?

My only hope is in You.

~~~
2 But as I stood there in silence—
not even speaking of good things—
the turmoil within me grew worse.
9 I am silent before You; I won’t say a word,
12 Hear my prayer, O LORD!
Listen to my cries for help!
Don’t ignore my tears.
And so, Lord, where do I put my hope?
My only hope is in You.
Psalm 39:2,9a,12a,7 NLT
Friday's Faith / Saturday's Sayings - When Terror Strikes
Friday's Faith /
Saturday's Sayings
When Terror Strikes...
♥~ Mary's agony over her Son brings the immense sorrow home! ~♥
When my child is gone, how do I go on living? My heart is pierced, and is ever in a compromised state.
So when more terror of potential loss threatens, I can hardly function...
~~~~~

No one ever told me grief was so much like fear.

~C.S. Lewis

So much of the time, I feel fear... How am I to do this "new normal" anyway? Nothing seems normal about any of this... I feel I am barely functioning as it is...

And then, when more is added to my plate... something that is potentially life-threatening to yet another person that I love, it very easily becomes too much, and my system hits Tilt. Fear and terror quickly overcome my already compromised state of being.

~~~~~
Maybe terror and dread, once experienced, embed themselves into you even when the cause has gone, leaving behind a sleeping horror, which is too easily awakened.
~Rosamund Lupton, Sister:A Novel
~~~~~

"Experience: the most brutal of teachers. But you learn, my God, do you learn."

~C. S. Lewis

~~~~~
For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.
~Isaiah 41:13 (New International Version)
~~~~~

I read God's Word; I am comforted by the thought that He will help me. And yet, another "time" comes to mind, a time when I was confident that He would help me, yet... He didn't... or, so it seemed to me at the time, as my child's life was suddenly and violently taken... So unconsciously when I read this Scripture, I think,

"That Scripture is so nice... so comforting... for other people, but it doesn't apply to me."

I am shocked by my own state of disillusionment that I would think that I am exempt from His love and grace that comes alongside and delivers us from Evil; that is when I realize my trust must be so  damaged from the Loss of my Child. (I know it is my problem, in perception, not His, but still I am troubled that I do not still have the confidence in Him that I once had...) {I weep as I write this.}

~~~~~
I sought the Lord and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears.
~Psalm 34:4 (English Standard Version)
Yes, but I must seek Him everyday, for everyday brings a new set of fears, trials, burdens that I cannot bear alone. And He is the answer to all of them, for He never said I could do this alone, rather He said through the apostle Paul, "I can do all things THROUGH CHRIST WHO STRENGTHENS ME."
~~~~~

In all our afflictions He is afflicted,
…and the angel of His presence saves us;
in His love and pity He redeems;
…He lifts us up and carries us all our days.

~Isaiah 63:9

He bears our griefs
…and carries our sorrows;
by His wounds we are healed.

~Isaiah 53:4, 5

~~~~~
So, sometimes, when more horror hits, like it is right now, instead of drawing closer to the Lord and feeling close to Him, the horror fills my soul, and I feel dropped. As if He has abandoned me, or how else could this devastating turn of events be happening???
~~~~~

Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed," says the LORD, who has compassion on you.

~Isaiah 54:10 (New International Version)

~~~~~
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
~Psalm 34:18 (English Standard Version)
~~~~~

God simply awaits me to call out to Him, or better yet amidst this horror, to cry out to Him, and He so faithfully draws near, pulls me in close to His heart, and my tears begin to flow...

Some relief is sure to follow, for I feel His presence and His loving comfort holding me up when I would otherwise be thrown to the ground in despair.

It seems when I finally engage Him in my sense of disillusionment, and my overwhelming fear, as I open up to Him, He comes to me...

~~~~~
As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted…"
~Isaiah 66:13
And despite my fears, He is able to comfort me and let me know He is still here for me, even though there is so much I still do not understand. I feel His presence and know I must turn to Him constantly as I am so weak, and so shaken. It is a constant battle when I feel under this "spiritual attack," for lack of better words. Even though I do not understand with my mind, I am thankful that I do feel His presence in my heart, and that comfort is able to overwhelm the terror, at least for a time.
And tomorrow...? I will undoubtedly need to start this process all over again as I am so fragile and shaken with this terror in the wings...
Friday's Faith - "My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?"
Friday's Faith
"My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?"
Fortunately for us, The Compassionate Friends website allows us to go back and hear webinars that we have had to miss due to conflicting schedules. So Tommy and I went back yesterday to hear Dennis Apple's webinar (You too can hear Dennis by clicking http://www.compassionatefriends.org/News_Events/Special-Events/Webinars.aspx
and scroll down to the video at the bottom of the page.).
Dennis, himself a Congregational pastor, felt like many of us child-loss grievers after the death of his son when he cried out,
"My God, My God, why have You forsaken me?"
After hearing Dennis's poignant presentation, I ran across a quote from another Child-Loss father who captures the same essence of the cry in these words:
“How is faith to endure, O God, when you allow all this scraping and tearing on us? You have allowed rivers of blood to flow, mountains of suffering to pile up, sobs to become humanity's song--all without lifting a finger that we could see. You have allowed bonds of love beyond number to be painfully snapped. If you have not abandoned us, explain Yourself.
"We strain to hear. But instead of hearing an answer we catch sight of God himself scraped and torn. Through our tears we see the tears of God.”
Friday's Faith- Individuation / Big Punch in the Spiritual Gut
Friday's Faith
Individuation
~
Big Punch in the Spiritual Gut
In thinking God's heart was the same as mine,
I was so confused at the death of my child...
I cannot grasp the plans of the Divine
that veer in directions "chaotic," "wild."
How could the Master of the Universe
allow Satan's wiles so Evil, Perverse
to take a child in the Spring of her life
against a mommy and daddy's prayers
lifted by Faith,
"Help her fight Evil's strife!"
For th' Loving One who e'en numbers her hairs
and loved her so much, He e'en gave His Son's life,
and loved us saying, "Just give ME your cares"...
Never in a million years would I grasp
the Master's plans to give win to the Asp!
Lights2, originally uploaded by Lomacar.
I know I see in a glass darkly now
and must trust by faith, 'nd in submission bow
to the God I know who is full of love,
that His plans will pan out in Heav'n above
to be consistent with His heart so full
of love for this child He's washed white as wool.
God give me Your grace and please understand
my confusion o'er Love's masterful plan.
Walk me through th' Valley of th' Shadow of Death,
Where, punched in the gut, I've lost all my breath...
