Friday's Faith - In Traumas, He Makes Me to Lie Down…

Friday's Faith

In Traumas, He Makes Me to Lie Down…

Tommy and I have been plagued with nightmares this week. Mine started last Friday night and Saturday morning just before Father's Day, so I was in a "real good" place to be supportive of Tommy on the always-difficult holiday, as you might imagine. The first nightmare put me particularly under and its haunting nature still remains with me, and the second nightmare just picked up where the first one left off. As they always say, "When it rains, it pours…." So then, we proceeded from there to have a particularly difficult weekend...

Ever since, sleep has not come easy for me. And during the day, coping hasn't been going so well either. The questions raised in my nightmares about Merry Katherine's situation before she was killed were opened up again, and some of them haunted me. I found that I was so traumatized that I became greatly agitated, so that any other thing, little or big, greatly got under my skin and made me miserable. What is it? Does Trauma breed Trauma? It was like I went from one difficult thing to another, and then was accosted by events that really hurt me by the very people who I otherwise had thought were extremely "safe" in my life. It was a horrible time, and I couldn't seem to shake the hurts, nor my baby's situation plaguing me...

Tommy was very sweet and tried to reach out to me as best he could. And he was very helpful. Sometimes I get so incredibly tense that there is no way I could ever get back to sleep at night without one of his gentle back rubs, and several times, he would help me get back to sleep. But we were both struggling, and sometimes that backfires, and we even find ourselves struggling "against" one another. We're doing okay now, but it wasn't easy getting to this place.

After one particularly difficult night of sleep, and facing a day with some challenging situations ahead with some of my clients, I lay there in bed after Tommy had gotten up, and just cried out to my God to please help me. There were so many toxins I just couldn't seem to let go of, and I knew my mind needed to be clear, at least for the sake of my clients. God came to me and was so incredibly tender…

It was like His Holy Spirit took over and took me on a gentle path of Spirit-guided imagery onto God's Living Waters...

I envisioned and imagined floating in the very clear, warm, and comforting waters of His River of Life, and as I floated along, with God by my side, I felt my tensions melting away. But then a memory of some of the weekend's miseries would infiltrate its way into my head all at once and would immediately throw me back into my turmoil.

Time after time these violations would ply their way into my mind and heart.

At each of those times, God gently spoke to me and said,

"Let it go; just let it float off of you."

No sooner would He say that than I would see the incident almost as a rectangular weight lodging upon me that would begin to lose its weightiness, become light enough to float, and then simply slither off of me and float away, tormenting me no more. It continued until several of the torments were lifted from me in a similar way, as I let them go and watched them slither off of me and just float away.

What  a soothing, comforting experience. It was literally a playing out of Psalm 23 that I often meditate to as I do my deep breathing to try to go to sleep, for He, my Shepherd, was "leading me beside the still waters," helping me to "lie down in green pastures," yet here, they were His living waters; He was even leading me down the path of righteousness as He led me one by one to lay my grievances down and let them go, so that time after time,

He was effectually restoring my soul.
It was God's transformative grace at work.

It was a beautiful meditation that He inspired and then entered into, bringing me healing manifestations that I could never have accomplished on my own. By the time I saw my clients, I was fine and was able to attend to their very pressing needs.

What a tender, empathic Savior we serve. His gentle grace overcame the raucous battle that I had allowed into my heart and soul, and He did it all so lovingly, no judgments against me, just gentleness.

I even cried out in the middle of it regarding what my child may have gone through before she was killed,
and He gently reminded me,
"But it got her to where she needed to be,"
which I knew was true.

Her heart indeed was made ready to see her God, and she had responded to Him just two days before she ultimately was to go and be with Him. The particular manifestations of our suffering don't really matter once we enter into the Savior's arms where He turns our mourning into joy, and so despite this angst, I settled down and knew she was okay ~ He was taking care of her just as He was taking care of me. And so even that pain and agony melted away and released from me.

Our loving Savior enters into our pain, bringing His presence and His comfort, ever nurturing our broken hearts, both mine here on earth, and my precious child's, up in Heaven. Anything else on this earth pales in comparison!

Wednesday's Woe - Like It Was Yesterday - (The Trauma They Don't Know About…)

Wednesday's Woe

Like It Was Yesterday...

(The Trauma They Don't Know About…)

I dreamed of my child today,
A young adult, just like she was then!
(Not as a child
Like I usually dream)
We were sitting together,
She, filling out forms,
Me, concerned about her
All, like it was yesterday…

She went with some doctors
They took her away
They came back a minute later
Saying, "She died."

I was just with her!
It can't be.
Disbelief!

I wake up ~
Relieved!

Coming out of my deep sleep
My mind scrambled
To make sense of now.
Realization.
But, she is gone!
She was killed!

Back to my living nightmare…

But… I was just with her!
It was all so real…
Just moments ago, with her!

Agitated for hours now,
not knowing why…
Then I weep…

I was just with her---
Now she's gone.
Again...

Grief starts all over
Like it was yesterday…

Wednesday's Woe - The Train Wreck of Our Grief

Wednesday's Woe

The Train Wreck of Our Grief

I dreamed this morning of my little girl, about 4-years-old in the dream, on vacation with us, wanting to wear her princess gown to play with her friends...

But as I was unpacking it for her to wear, she ran out onto the hotel's patio, and jumped over, holding onto the railing.

As I stiffened my body bracing it against the railing for strength, I carefully yet fearfully reached over to hopefully pull her up to safety,

but...

she let go...

and fell the long distance to the ground.

As my heart was panicking that she would be hurt, I awakened...

Does the terror ever stop...?

I know the ever trying to save continues...

As our lives seem ever to be in limbo after losing our child, I thought this morning...

It seems when I lost you, I not only lost you,

I lost me too...

...For I still seem to live in Limbo-Land.

And yet...

Charles Spurgeon captures the devastation of our loss amidst the tender love of our Lord so well in his quote. It seems that despite the worst that has happened, somehow God intervenes as only His Love can do...

“I bear my witness that the worst days I have ever had have turned out to be my best days. And when God has seemed most cruel to me He has then been most kind. If there is anything in this world for which I would bless him more than for anything else it is for pain and affliction. I am sure that in these things the richest tenderest love has been manifested to me. Our Father's wagons rumble most heavily when they are bringing us the richest freight of the bullion of his grace. Love letters from heaven are often sent in black-edged envelopes. The cloud that is black with horror is big with mercy. Fear not the storm. It brings healing in its wings and when Jesus is with you in the vessel the tempest only hastens the ship to its desired haven.”

And his following quote rings so true...

“The Lord's mercy often rides to the door of our hearts on the black horse of affliction. Jesus uses the whole range of our experiences to wean us from earth and woo us to Heaven.”

Wednesday's Woe - "Look What You Can't Have!" ~Tommy Prince

Wednesday's Woe

"Look What You Can't Have!"

~Tommy Prince

Just before awakening this morning, I dreamed about Merry Katherine… Cruel and inhuman punishment. It's like going to a funeral over… and over… and over.

In the middle of the dream, what happens is, I am felling a sense of well-being. This is the way life is supposed to be… She is here---at home where she is supposed to be---just getting her things organized.

There's an abruptness to it when I wake up. It's like we've talked about before on the blog ~ It's like going to the starting blocks over and over and over… Revisiting that whole thing of, "She really isn't here anymore." And because of that abruptness, it takes me several days just to get back to the functioning level.

One of the many things Merry Katherine and I had in common was a love of good music. In the dream, we were just going through some c.d.s --- I found one that was hers.

"Here, do you want to listen to this?"

A normal occurrence that was so refreshing because it was so normal.

I awaken only to discover I'm thrown back to Square One.

It's as though, like cancer, my trauma and pain goes into remission temporarily, and then it comes back out ~ with a vengeance.

It's like a

"Gotcha! Look what you can't have!"

Like with Angie…

She sat down yesterday to have her coffee, and the house was empty. Peace and Quiet. And all of a sudden, the grief surfaces, and eight kleenexes later, she's in a pile, in touch with the abject reality of missing her baby, all over again. (That is the state she was in as she wrote the poem she  put in yesterday's blog post.)

Just now, as she's writing this post, her tears are flowing again; the kleenex come back out. The unbearable pain surfaces as she relives the normalcy of having our baby "back" even as she hears the details of my dream.

Again, the gut-wrenching tears flow, as if, like a mine-drilling, it's like the "oil" gushes up from the heart of her soul, as her heart and soul dredge up a tiny portion of their pain. . .

It's time to go back to bed.

Oh wait, now the bed is not a sanctuary for me… Lately, just trying to get rest is the source of my pain!

Whether it's sitting down to the quiet, or having the space in your life to have dreams, it seems our grief will "out"… one way or another. This is a snapshot of grief at six years…

Tuesday's Trust - A Grieving Mother's "Day Off"

Tuesday's Trust

A Grieving Mother's "Day Off"

It's a day off ~ you'd think I'd have no cares.
I go to sleep ~ awaken to nightmares...
You needed help ~ there was no help I'd find;
I saw the one ~ who'd always helped... was blind.

Is this my life ~ suspended in mid-air?
What is my crime? For you, I'll always care.

A mommy's love ~ should soothe your hurts away.
But when I look ~ I see you've gone away.

Your heart's at rest ~ may that sink in, I pray.
My God knows best ~ He holds you close today.

Your mommy tried ~ she couldn't reach your heart.
And now you've died ~ and now we are apart.
I guess you know ~ you're always in my heart.

I'll see you soon ~ Would someone tell my heart?

Wednesday's Woe - Boomeranged Back to Square One...

Wednesday's Woe

Boomeranged Back to Square One...

~Angie and Tommy Prince

Tommy:

I took a nap on Saturday and dreamed about Merry Katherine. Unlike other recent dreams, the "world" in my dream was normal ~ Merry Katherine was here; she was sitting at our large desk in the den, on the computer where she often listened to music and/or recorded music to listen to later. I felt good. Life was good.

Then I woke up and was hit with the stark reality that none of what I just experienced in my dream was even remotely true. I went from a good feeling to a despairing sigh -- "Crap. That wasn't real..."

Having good feelings (like I'd had in my dream) are not there any more. The reality is the bad, and I have to come back down to the reality -- Bad feelings are here to stay...

Angie:

I dreamed about Merry Katherine Sunday night after Tommy had told me about his dream of her the night before. When he described his dream to me, I got triggered to her life when she was walking the tightrope of loving her family to searching for her next fix. I was afraid to ask Tommy when she was sitting at the desk in his dream, "Were things going well, or was she in a 'bad' place?" I didn't want to know. I couldn't go there. So I didn't dare ask.

So that night, I guess my subconscious was seeking resolution as I dreamed about her too. She was back home, but in the stage of her acting out. Our lives too were contorted around this tightrope in the form of wanting to have a normal, loving relationship with her versus (in my dream) hiding things that might be a temptation for her (such as money, credit cards, or even an adult I.D.) for her to supply her next fix. (She never once stole from us, but we knew things could easily deteriorate to that point.) It was very depressing to me in my dream because I didn't want to be in that defensive mode around her. I just wanted to love her and be a healthy part of her life. I was so frustrated at the push/pull of the relationship at the same time I was missing her ~ and our intimacy with her ~ dearly. And then I woke up...

Tommy and I were talking later...

And this is what we get for trying to take care of ourselves by getting good rest!

We always know after these dreams and nightmares: Now we're in for the boomerang effect of being thrown back to square one ~ She is not here, and our lives are changed forever...

Bad feelings are here to stay, and Merry Katherine is not...

Wednesday’s Woe - Nightmare - Stuck in Time

Wednesday’s Woe

Nightmare - Stuck in Time

What PTSD Looks Like...

I haven't been the same since I dreamed a couple of days ago - that I was with Merry Katherine in a swing - Merry Katherine was a toddler. But the swing was a type of child-like car. There were other toddlers in the room with us. They were in their own cars. I was driving Merry Katherine, and we were following her friends from room to room at a pretty fast speed. She said, "Can't we go faster?" and grabbed the control (like a Playstation-type conrol). She pushed the buttons, and we began to go really fast; it felt like flying to me, so I said, "No baby, we can't do this..." and then I awakened...

Once again, I felt out-of-control, like I had been pushed too far at her insistence and it was gonna be to her demise - I can 't seem to break out of this nightmare - She, helpless, and thinking like a child, I her mommy, the adult in the position supposed to help her, yet I was helpless to stop her... and it all led to her demise...

Much of my life seemed to be about handling that balance, allowing enough of a challenge for her, but not so much that it could put her in danger...yet she would always push the limits...and ultimately did so, to her sure demise...

Nightmare - Stuck in Time

My baby girl, so sweet to me,

19 years, had her with me.

Now, she has gone to Heaven...

But I? I'm stuck in a nightmare,

So my life's stuck in time...

Stuck in a nightmare

God, I can't get out -

My baby's in danger

I cant get her out...

When can I stop this Merry-go-round

That threw my poor baby down to the ground?

Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall...

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall

And now I can't throw a pillow down,

I can't break her fall down to the ground…

And with all the king's horses and with all the king's men

...We still can't put my baby back together again...

Jack and Jill ran up the hill to fetch a pail of water...

Jack fell down and broke his crown, and

Jill came tumbling after...

Stuck in a nursery rhyme

Stuck in time

My baby's not here with me

My life's stuck in time...

Stuck in a nightmare

God, I can't get out -

My baby's in danger

And I cant get her out...

Stuck in a nursery rhyme

When can I stop this Merry-go-round?

That threw my poor baby down to the ground?

My baby fell down and broke her crown,

And now I can't throw a pillow down,

To break her fall down to the ground...

And I can't put her back together again...

And I can't bring her back home to me again...

So I'm stuck in an endless nursery rhyme

That ends in senseless tragedy...

(What were those nursery rhymes telling me

when I was only 2 or 3,

sitting upon my Mother's knee?)

Nursery rhymes warn of life's senseless tragedy?

Stuck in a nightmare

God, I can't get out -

My baby's in danger

I cant get her out...

When can I stop this Merry-go-round

That threw my poor baby down to the ground?

I can't stop her fall.

I can't break her fall.

I can't stop this senseless tragedy,

But this was my baby who sat on my knee...

And now my baby's not here with me,

But my body's on alert, cannot forget.

Stuck in a panic, stuck in a sweat...

My baby's in danger

I must get her out...

Stuck in a senseless nursery rhyme,

So my life's stuck in time...

Stuck in a nightmare

God, I can't get out -

My baby's in danger

I cant get her out...

When can I stop this Merry-go-round

That threw my poor baby girl down to the ground?

Now, she has gone to Heaven,

But I?

I'm stuck in a nightmare,

So my life's stuck in time...

{How can so much of God's truth

be stuck in a nursery rhyme?}

Stuck in a nursery rhyme

Stuck in time

My baby's not here with me

My life's stuck in time...

Now, she has gone to Heaven,

But I?

I'm stuck in a nightmare,

So my life's stuck in time...
