Tuesday's Trust - Christmas Reflections: My Child's 5th Christmas in Heaven

Christmas Reflections

Tuesday's Trust

Christmas Reflections:

My Child's 5th Christmas in Heaven

When my child was alive, many times I felt I did not know how best to parent her.

Now I find I do not know how best to grieve her.

Both jobs feel like they are full-time, on-the-job intensive training. And with each "job," I find it holds the intensity of life or death. With such sacred callings, to love and to grieve my precious child, I find I can entrust myself only to my Lord who is Himself, the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

This child is a ball-of-energy, full of life, and I find that out of necessity, she challenges me to discover new energies, skills, and friendships which energize and enliven my life...both before...and after...her life in Heaven.

What an impact this precious child and hers-and-my precious Lord have on me. What joy she must feel to see that she so strongly impacts her mommy's life, ensuring her mommy takes up her own energetic pursuit of life and love that brings joy and fulfillment in this life, and even more-so in the life-to-come. Even now, it seems her life invests in mine much more richly than it feels I was able to invest in hers in the relatively short time she was here.

Thank you, sweet baby for loving your mommy even and especially when I hurt, and for being ever-ready with your show-stopping smile when you see me faltering in my deep grief.

It is amazing to me how just your smile can snap me out of the deepest traumatic grief, and transport me into a warm feeling, a smile, and sometimes even a laugh ~ almost instantaneously.

It seems like one of the Heavenly miracles God gives me through you. How sweet He is to share you with me and let you still be a part of my life! That you can bring such uplifting joy into the deepest, darkest grueling grief is truly one of God's greatest Treasures found in the Darkness.

Your smile brings not only joy into my grief, but it brings you and your enlivened spirit back into my life.

Providing ...

A rare glance into Eternity.

A peek into the Unseen.

A reminder of Light that overcomes our Darkness.

Assurance of what I hope for.

Certainty of what I do not "see."

Evidence of the Graciousness of God's Redeeming Love.

Thank You God for this gift of sharing my child with me in spirit, one of the many miracles that Your Son's birth brings to us ~ Your children still on earth, longing for Home!

Monday's Mourning Ministry - In the Bleak Midwinter ~poem by Christina Rossetti ~song performed by Gloucester Cathedral Choir

Monday's Mourning Ministry

In the Bleak Midwinter

~poem by Christina Rossetti

~song performed by Gloucester Cathedral Choir

In the Bleak Midwinter

~Gloucester Cathedral Choir

In the bleak mid-winter,

frosty wind made moan.

Earth stood hard as iron,

water like a stone;

Snow had fallen, snow on snow:

snow on snow on snow

in the bleak mid-winter,

long, long ago.

Our God, heav'n cannot hold Him

nor earth sustain

Heav'n and earth shall flee away

when He comes to reign.

In the bleak mid-winter,

a stable-place sufficed

the Lord God Almighty

Jesus Christ.

Angels and arch angels

may have gathered there

cherubim and seraphim

thronged the air

But only his mother

in her maiden bliss

worshipped the Beloved

with a kiss.

What can I give him

poor as I am?

If I were a shepherd,

I would bring a lamb.

If I were a wise man,

I would do my part.

Yet what I can, I give him

give my heart.

from The Telegraph

"The Small, warm heart in a bleak, wintry world:

Why does the Christmas story still hold such appeal"

(The Telegraph prints the following from Telegraph View 12/23/10 from which we have taken an excerpt)

As the Archbishop of Canterbury wrote this month, the Christmas story appeals to people of all cultures and beliefs partly because it "outrageously suggests that putting our hand into the clutch of a baby may be the most important thing we can ever do".

Christians believe more: that this presence of defenceless love is "the ultimate power in the universe".

The Elizabethan poet Robert Southwell expressed it in a series of paradoxes:

"The Word is dumb, the Mirth of Heaven doth weep,

Might feeble is, and Force doth faintly creep."

~Robert Southwell

In the Bleak Midwinter

(*The full poem)

In the bleak midwinter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone:
Snow had fallen, snow on snow
Snow on snow,
In the bleak mid-winter,
Long ago.

Our God, heaven cannot hold him
Nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away
When he comes to reign:
In the bleak mid-winter
A stable-place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty
Jesus Christ.

Enough for him, whom cherubim
Worship night and day,
A breastful of milk,
And a mangerful of hay:
Enough for him, whom angels
Fall down before,
The ox and ass and camel
Which adore.

Angels and archangels
May have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim
Thronged the air -
But only his mother
In her maiden bliss
Worshipped the beloved
With a kiss.

What can I give him,
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb;
If I were a wise man
I would do my part;
Yet what I can, I give him -
Give my heart.

Blessed Christmas! - A Letter to Jesus' Child-Loss Parents on Christmas Morn ~ Mary Did You Know?

Blessed Christmas!

A Letter to Jesus' Child-Loss Parents on Christmas Morn

~

Mary Did You Know?

Mary, Did You Know

~Written by Mark Lowry and Buddy Greene

~Sung by Clay Aiken

~Video scenes from Mel Gibson's movie, "The Passion of the Christ"

Mary, did you know

that your baby boy would one day walk on water?

Mary, did you know

that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters?

Did you know,

that your baby boy has come to make you new?

This child that you've delivered,

will soon deliver you.

Mary, did you know

that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?

Mary, did you know

your baby boy will calm a storm with His hand?

Did you know,

that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?

When you kiss your little baby,

you've kissed the face of God.

O Mary did you know?

The blind will see

The deaf will hear

The dead will live again.

The lame will leap

The dumb will speak

The praises of The Lamb.

Mary, did you know

that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?

Mary, did you know

that your baby boy would one day rule the nations?

Did you know,

that your baby boy is heaven's perfect lamb?

This sleeping child you're holding, is the great I AM.

Jan 1 - The Octave of Christmas (8th day after Christmas) The Law of Moses calls for a male child to be taken to the Temple for circumcision at which time the mother is considered to be 'the mother'.

A Letter to Jesus' Child-Loss Parents on Christmas Morn

Mother Mary... th' only Child-loss mother

Who got t' see your Child again this side o' Heav'n,

'Nd yet suffered horrid scene of another:

You were there t' view th' sordid death of your Child...

Tell us, Mother Mary, what was it like

To see your Son restored again on earth,

Having conquered death with God's Holy Smite

To stand before His mother full of smiles?

God of Heav'n, give us faith that we might see

Our holy child as she stands before Thee

With holy rapture on her face, at peace

Before her Living Lord, the King of Kings

Who pardoned all her sins and set her free,

This ransomed soul rescued from sure captivity.

What mercy not to see her violent death

When Vile One snatched her from her mother's arms,

Cast her body to th' ground for her last breath

Thinking he'd surely won th' last victory...

But up from the ground He arose to smite

Vile death, th' spawn of that Wicked Enemy,

And with that resurrection brought my child

Up to His side, outpouring tears and smiles!

Lord, thank You that on this Holy Morn we see

Christ the Lord, our child's and our Newborn King

Who came to set all His captives free

To live together with Him through all eternity,

Steeped in love and peace and laughter, to see

Our Lord of Lords with nail-scarred hands seated

On the throne of Love's hard-won victory!

Thank You for Your willingness t' suffer Child-loss

Allowing Your child t' die on cruel cross

To rescue each of us, Your tender lambs

To restored Life in th' arms of our Great I AM.

We bow before You this Morn in holy awe

In grief for all You grievously saw

That we and our babies might live again

Because of our Newborn King's nail-scarred hand...

Looking with the eyes of faith as You taught

T' years of holding one another in love

Because of Love's Great Sacrifice You wrought.

Thank You for gracing us w'th such Abba love!

Seeing our sweet Merry Katherine in Your arms,

We cry, "Merry Christmas!" as our heart warms...

Wishing all my GCC friends...

As a Merry Christmas bonus, I wanted to add these poems that I found tonight on a grieving mother's (Noemi, mother of Luijoe) blog I have followed for awhile. Noemi lost her 6-year-old son while on her vacation with him and their family in 2000.

My First Christmas in Heaven

I see countless Christmas trees

Around the world below,

With tiny lights like heaven's stars,

Reflecting on the snow.

The sight is so spectacular,

Please wipe away the tear,

For I am spending Christmas

With Jesus this year.

I hear the many Christmas songs

That people hold so dear,

But the sound of music can't compare

With the Christmas choir up here.

I have no words to tell you,

The joy their voices bring,

For it is beyond description,

To hear the angels sing.

I know how much you miss me,

I see the pain inside your heart,

But I am not so far away;

We really aren't apart.

So be happy for me, dear ones;

You know I hold you dear,

And be glad I'm spending Christmas

With Jesus Christ this year.

I sent you each a special gift,

From my heavenly father above,

I sent you each a memory

Of my undying love.

After all love is a gift,

More precious than pure gold,

It was always most important

In the stories that Jesus told.

Please love each other,

As my father said to do,

For I can't count the blessingS or love

He has for each of you.

So have a Merry Christmas

And wipe away that tear,

Remember--- I am spending Christmas

With Jesus this year.

In Heaven We'll Understand

Not now , but in the coming years

It may be in the heavenly Land,

We'll read the meaning of our tears:

Some day in Heaven we'll understand

We'll know why clouds instead of sun

Were over many a cherished plan;

Why smiles have ceased when just begun;

Some day in heaven we'll understand.

Then trust in God, through all thy days

Fear not for He doth hold thy hand;

But whilst you live, still sing and praise;

Some day in Heaven we'll understand.

(Anna Lee Edwards McAlpin)

May you have a very Merry, and very Blessed Christmas Day!

A note on http://forum.christianwomentoday.com discusses the possible author of My First Christmas in Heaven:

(I'm not sure who the author of the following poem is, but it is really nice. It has been attributed to a 13 year old girl named Lysandra Kay Bencke who had a seizeure. After being in a coma for 5 days, she apparently died on Christmas day in 1997. Another source says it was a 13 year old boy named Ben who died of a brain tumor after battling the disease for 4 years. Apparently he gave this poem to his mom prior to his death on Dec 14/1997. Whoever wrote it, I pray that it will bless some of you wonderful ladies. Get out the tissues, especially if you have lost a loved one this year... (and if anyone knows for sure who the author was, please let me know. Thanks)

Friday's Faith - Jesus Comes to Us Grievers... Living in the Land of the Shadow of Death / O Little Town of Bethlehem ~Connie Talbot

Friday's Faith

Jesus Comes to Us Grievers...

Living in the Land of the Shadow of Death

~

O Little Town of Bethlehem

~Connie Talbot

...(T)he people living in darkness
have seen a great light;

On those living in the land of the shadow of death
a Light has dawned...

~Matthew 4:14a,16

Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress...

The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
a light has dawned.
You have enlarged the nation
and increased their joy;
they rejoice before You
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
when dividing the plunder.
For as in the day of defeat,
You have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor.
Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,
will be fuel for the fire.
For to us a Child is born,
to us a Son is given,
and the government will be on His shoulders.
And He will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of His government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the LORD Almighty
will accomplish this.

~Isaiah 9:1a-7

"O little town of Bethlehem,

How still we see thee lie!

Above thy deep and dreamless sleep

The silent stars go by.

Yet in the dark streets shineth

The Everlasting Light;

The hopes and fears of all the years

Are met in thee tonight."

~Phillips Brooks, 1867

Jesus Comes to Us Grievers...

Living in the Land of the Shadow of Death

"On those living in the land of the shadow of death
a Light has dawned..."

The yoke that burdens me ~

Jesus came so that He

Could shatter th' Oppressor...

Carry on His shoulder

The new reign of His Light

That conquers Death's Dark Night

That threw us into Shadow

From once light-filled meadow

(When our child was with us,

Delighting, thrilling us).

We, living in darkness,

Living in Death's oppress,

Watch Him destroy Death's yoke

(Which did Deep Grief evoke

Which threw us to the ground...

Sounds of mourning abound).

But God sent us His Son

Squelching Darkness with th' Son,

And with this dawn of Light,

Turned Dark Death into Life!

Prince of Peace saved Mourning's plight,

Gives Eternal Morning's Light ~

Restores to us a Glorious sight:

Love's embrace restores Delight!

Bless You, Savior, Our True Light...

Born this Heavenly Christmas night!

Mary's Prayer

Sleep well... Sleep well,
for the heat of anger simmers nearby...

Enjoy the silence of the crib, for the noise of confusion
rumbles in Your future.

Savor the sweet safety of my arms,
for a day is soon coming when I cannot protect you.

Rest well, tiny hands.

For though you belong to a king,
You will touch no satin, own no gold.
You will grasp no pen, guide no brush.

No, Your tiny hands are reserved
for works more precious:

to touch a leper's open wound,

to wipe a widow's weary tear,

to claw the ground of Gethsemane.

Your hands, so tiny, so tender...
~clutched tonight in an infant's fist.

They aren't destined to hold a scepter
nor wave from a palace balcony.

They are reserved instead for a Roman spike
that will staple them to a Roman cross.

...O eyes that will see Hell's darkest pit
and witness her ugly prince...

sleep, please sleep;

sleep while You can.

~Max Lucado, God Comes Near,

*****

What came into existence was Life,

and the Life was Light to live by.

The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness;

the darkness couldn't put it out..

~John 1:5

*****

If your heart has been shadowed by the darkness of loneliness or grief
or disappointment, look for the light only He can give.

~Max Lucado, Just Like Jesus

*****

I am the light of the world.
The person who follows Me
will never live in darkness
but will have the light that gives life.

~Jesus (John 8:12)

O Little Town of Bethlehem

~Connie Talbot

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie;

Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by;

Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light;

The hopes and fears of all the years are met in Thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary, and gathered all above,

While mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love.

O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth,

And praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth.

How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given!

So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His Heaven

No ear may hear His coming; but in this world of sin,

Where meek souls will receive Him still the dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us we pray

Cast out our sin, and enter in; be born in us today.

We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell;

O Come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel.
